Rounded Fruits Bring Good Luck?

The Filipinos have this superstitious belief of preparing 12 kinds of rounded fruits to represent the 12 months of the coming year so that the whole year round will be prosperous. This is why the markets are by now flooded with rounded fruits because the superstitious will surely buy them even if their prices have actually soared. I also bought my favorite fruits today not because I believe this superstitious but because I can’t live without fruits even for just a day. I fact most of those I bought are not even rounded like the mangoes, papayas and bananas. Do you also have food related superstitious beliefs for the New Year ?

My in-laws are so into that belief that they would always buy 12 round fruits every New Year's Eve . And some of them would just rut after , because they weren't nice to eat .

I saw many people just letting the fruits rot away. It is such a waste to buy them at expensive price and then just let them rot. This is why I only buy those that I eat not necessarily 12 kinds and not necessarily round.

@SIMPLYD So maybe their purpose is just to have them for display but I think you are right. If you buy fruits, make sure you can also eat them to avoid waste.

@salonga well, they can buy those 12 fruits , but they should also be eating them , not letting them rot away , which is one way of taking off its lucky aspect as they believe they give . Thus , they should choose them well as to how they will ripen over the days , as some that my in-laws bought were still raw . And they won't even ripe nicely thus we don't eat them .

Not hard to find 12 kinds of rounded fruits indeed but the problem is the higher the demand the higher the price

We usually don't complete those 12 fruits. As long as we have some round ones then it's enough. One superstitious belief that my parents follow is that we should not prepare chicken for the new year's eve.

Would you know why they avoid chicken?

@salonga maybe because GOOD LUCK might fly away. chickens are fowl, like the birds. (Huwag kumain manok, lilipad swelte--- "don't eat chicken, good luck will fly"--- in Chinese way of speaking).

when my kid brother and his family were living in their house, we would exchange 12 grapes on new year's day, and we hang it at the door. Now they are not here anymore, but we still follow the 12 round fruits on the table for media noche.

rounded fruits have nothing to do to make our life prosperous for the whole year. Traditionally my family prays together as the year ended and we welcome the new year with thanksgiving and prayers. Let's ask guidance . wisdom. safety, good health most of all, ask forgiveness for all the bad things we did from the past and pray for God's blessings for our family throughout the whole year

No, we don't have any superstitious beliefs about the beginning of the year. I would be eating all the fruit, Morning Girl because I love all kinds of fruits! LOL! There would be none left for the superstitious if I were in your country!
