She's Not A Good Travel Companion

When my brother and I and our two dogs went to visit my kids and grandkids on the 19th, we discovered something quite by accident. Daisy was in her kennel and Bella was lying in the back seat. We decided to keep Daisy in the kennel because she is only 6 months old and hasn't traveled as much as Bella has. Daisy has only traveled to the vet and back. We thought Daisy would be okay, never thought there would be a problem. She did pretty good most of the way there but she did cry for the first 30 minutes or so. We were about 20 minutes from my son's house when Daisy got car sick. There wasn't anything I could do from the front seat except reach through the kennel and pet her to reassure her. When we arrived, needless to say I had a mess to clean up. I thought maybe she got sick because I fed her that morning so I made sure she didn't have anything to eat that afternoon, knowing we had an hour drive to go back home. Daisy was fine the whole time we were there and I told my grandkids not to feed her and let them know why. When we were driving home, Daisy got sick again. I didn't know how bad it was until we got home because it was so dark. I had to end up giving her a bath and washing all of her bedding. I felt so sorry for the poor little thing. Needless to say, Daisy won't be taking anymore trips like that with us until we get something from the vet for nausea. I was so used to all the dogs I have had that never got car sick before and wasn't expecting this at all. With Bella and Cricket (R.I.P.) we traveled to Las Vegas from Tennessee and back again without any trouble at all. Have you ever had a pet that got car sick? I read that they can sometimes outgrow this so I am keeping my fingers crossed that this happens.

we only transport our cat when going to the vets so her panic is more about her suspicions on her destination than the journey itself

So, she has learned that when the travels, it's to the Vet?

@simone10 yes she associates the car with the trip to the vet

@arthurchappell No wonder she gets to anxious. But then again, I don't think there are a lot of people who take their cats for car rides like people do with dogs.

Freya the Catblog Cat actually quite likes a car ride. When I had a car she was fine as long as I kept up a conversation.in "meow: language with her. She was never sick.

I wish I could say the same thing about poor little Daisy. Her sister Bella travels just fine but Daisy doesn't do well at all.

Some pets just do not travel very well. I had a cat who would howl whenever we tried to take her anywhere. It was so unpleasant!!

I bet it was unpleasant. My other dog Bella is okay with traveling although she will pant for quite a while, even when it's cold outside.

I've never had a pet get sick but we used to have to set my grandmother very carefully in the front seat of the car so she didn't get sick. I think some people/animals just get off kilter and get sick. I wonder if the vet has some pills for motion sickness.

Oh poor Daisy! I don't think we've ever had an animal to get car sick. Of course we've never taken any of ours any further than the vet either. I don't have any animals now though. Maybe you could try taking her on drives once a week? A little bit longer than from your home to the vets, and a little further each time?

@ScribbledAdNauseum We are kind of afraid to take her in the car for a long time until we speak to the vet and see what she says. Hopefully she will outgrow it.

We were very lucky with our dog she used to get far too excited before we went in the car and used to cry until we left. She loved to ride in the car.

Some dogs can get car sick if they are confined. They might need some fresh air to breath. I know when I traveled with my small dog I use to leave him by me. he was a great traveler from day one. I have never used a kennel for my dog. But if I have to take the cat to the vet I have a carrier for her. But no matter what he hates it and hates to be put in the car. The dogs love the car and they are excited when I take them anywhere. I guess I take my dogs with me a lot so they are both use to being in the car with me. The large one rides in the back of the truck where he loves it so much.

We don't bring our dogs whenever we travel because we know they can't manage. We leave them to a caretaker instead.

I did not know that this also happens to dog, I am car sick if I travel on the back seat. I have always had this problem since I was a kid, if I eat nothing is worst.

My son had a dog that got car sick and got pills from the vet. He (my son) was my baby that got car sick every time we took him anywhere. I was happy when he grew out of it. I fell bad for your doggy too.

Dogs and cats can get car sick just like kids and adults @simone10 . It's the motion of the vehicle that causes it.
