I Had A Scary Moment

This morning I got up, turned on the computer, and made myself a cup of coffee. I went to myLot and started commenting on stuff that happened here and were in my notifications. Having a merry time. My sister is a knitter and I remembered a post by Anna about the Netflix Socks so I wanted to bookmark that so I could show her. She might want to give this a try.
Next thing I know every time I clicked a new notification a new window opened on my browser. Hmmm what the heck is going on? I am not computer savvy by any stretch of the imagination and was puzzled as to what to do. I closed the browser and restarted my computer. What happened next was even more puzzling and very much upsetting to me.
Once my computer restarted and the start page came up, I have windows 8 I couldn't get to my desktop at all. Omg really!! After some time, and even now I'm not sure how I got to my desktop. I pulled up a browser and still the same thing happening a new window with each and every click. My next thought was maybe reloading the browser. Another new problem. When trying to type in an address in the address bar the entire browser would close with the first letter I typed. No no no. this can't be happening and what did I do.
I did a system restore. All the while waiting on it to complete I was planning my next step. Silly of me but I was considering driving 250 miles to my son's house to have him fix it. Thankfully system restore fixed everything, and now I'm happily back on myLot with my computer working just fine.
Strange I'm not sure what happened. Anyone have any ideas. I am sure the only thing I did was bookmark that post by Anna and then I went to the link she gave in the post. That was it. The link wasn't even a live link I copied and pasted it.

I depend on system restore first in many cases it fixes things. Who knows why it did it, you will probably never have it happen again.

Software problems. You probably installed or saved any file which are malicious. By that, attackers intentionally go beyond your machine to look for info that might useful to them. By restoring like what you did, will erase the previous traces made by them. But it's 30% assurance only. Reformatting your computer is the best solution. Back-up first.

@fishtiger58 Go to advance settings too and set all the options at maximum. They will take much of your resources (RAM) though but at least your safe.

System restore is a wonderful thing. Usually when I have to system restore I go 5 days back. They will give you a date, but if you don't like that date you can ask for more choices.

I'm an x software specialist that used to work help desk. So your sister is a knitter that's so cool. I bet that is handy in the wintertime. I have hand knitted warm pair of mittens that I really treasure.
So is there anything else that I can help you with today?

I wouldn't be afraid of socks myself. The yarn makes for warm conversation.
I understand in knitting if you loose count when counted stitches are important you might have to take the whole thing down and start over. Something like windows.

@fishtiger58 Overall I have been satisfied with Windows 10. I run it on my big laptop and my little laplet. As with anything new, there have been some minor glitches, but all in all, it has worked well.
That being said, my missus still doesn't want it on her computer,

@DWDavis I with her I don't either. I hate when MS releases things they know aren't ready. It's all about the almighty buck and not the bad things that happen to people's computers.

That would have me worried. I have no idea what was going on. I've had my Mac now just over a year. My sister has been moaning about the new Windows 10?... I tried to use her Windows 8 during the summer but I'm lost with microsoft and now love my Mac.

Mine has Windows 8, but every time I turn on my computer it asks if I want to upgrade to Windows 10, however I have not heard good things about Windows 10 so I'm not going to do that. Windows 8 was hard enough to get used to. I was frantic Marilyn just really happy the system restore worked.

I found it, it's turned off but it could have been on yesterday before my system restore. I did go into that section to try to find out what was going on, but I didn't go there until after the trouble started.

Oh, I totally know that feeling when those things happen. My tablet was acting up this morning, too... kept telling me I wasn't on the 'Net, but I was... wanting me to sign in. It finally fixed itself without me having to do anything. Whew! I really don't know what would cause the issue you had, but I hope someone will be able to tell you... I'm interested in the answer, too!

You might have accidentally downloaded and installed a virus. If you have your own copy of Windows, reformatting/clean install will do the job. However, if you are using laptops with pre-installed OS (OEM), reformatting will delete the recovery partition.
