Excited about the New Year?

A friend of mine called me asking, “How was New Year’s eve?” As always my response was, “It was okay, went to the church and all the obvious things one can do, nothing too cool.” He was a bit disappointed. “You do not seem to be excited about the New Year” he said. This is true, I’m not jumping over my bed wearing party hats screaming “Yay Happy New Year!” No. Not because I’m a pessimist or that I no longer believe in ‘new beginnings’ but simply because I’m currently occupied with something else. Although my friend’s assertion got me into thinking how important it is to be excited. Ever noticed how people tend to believe that there is something wrong with you if you fail to behave in ways they expect you to. Ever noticed how we try to ‘fix ourselves’ when we deviate from main stream emotional responses. Such reaction is natural simply because as humans we are programmed to strive for social acceptance. But why should one be excited about the New Year at all? What is so promising about it? Nothing. Nothing but our expectations. People believe New Year is the time to change for the better. Yes New Year is a good time to improve just like the rest of the year. What we must keep in mind is that the opportunity for a better existence always presents itself. Considering that to be true, the excitement we experience on New Year’s Day must last our entire lives isn’t it?

I am not excited about New Year too. Every year is the same. You can expect both good and bad things to happen, and you always have to think about budgeting, and money management carefully.

Personally there is nothing exciting about my 2016 but globally there are a lot of exciting new things going on in the fields of science and technolgy and in politics. The world is changing and that is worth getting excited or even worried about.

@mammots ooh yea, I'm not much into politics but I can talk about science. The field of communications is really blooming, Facebook is trying to launch some new services here in India under an attempt to connect the rural population with the global one. On the other hand problems like Global warming and climate change present a huge threat to our planet. Only time can tell the fate of our species......
