MyLot 2016!

MyLot has now been 'reborn' for five months. Those of us who have been here since the Ark was built have welcomed a fair number of 'old' members back as well as a very encouraging congregation of new members. I'm sure you will all join me in thanking @mylotbugs and @goaskalice for an excellent and well-run site and in wishing them a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. Apart from the obvious, 'better earnings' (I'm sure that many would wish that), what are your hopes for MyLot in 2016? What do you think would make this a better community and what improvements would you like to see which would make the site more useful to everyone? What do you think will take us forward in 2016?

Of course I join to thank @mylotbugs and @goaskalice for the excellent work. I agree with @boiboing, when we report, we should have a drop down menu to indicate the reason of reporting. I would like to have a better way to search for members, the two step search is not practical and many people have not understood how it works.

Personally, I would appreciate more interactive reporting (so we can indicate why a post isn't acceptable) and I'd love to see people who cheat given fewer second chances. I would also be pretty happy if blocking really meant blocking and not this half-hearted system we have now where someone can block you from commenting on their posts but still comment on yours.

I agree that a drop-down list of categories (and a place to enter sources for plagiarism) would make reporting more interactive. I believe that this is already on a 'wants' list and one of the things I'm hoping we shall see this year. I also think that a message or an email should be sent automatically to every user whose discussion is deleted giving a brief reason. This used to happen but the mechanism has not worked for a long time, it seems. I tend to agree with you, too, about blocking, though I'm not very happy about the whole concept. I also think that people should be notified (or otherwise know) when they have been been blocked.

@owlwings That would certainly stop the sneaky blocking. If people knew that their action would result in a mail to the blockee, they might be more careful about using the function.

@boiboing Some might be deterred but I know a few who wouldn't (one of whom was finally barred, thank goodness!)

I will be quite content of the site remains as it is. Since the first instance of Mylot announcing the old earnings program was being discontinued, too many site have appeared and disappeared, so I am simply hoping to remain here this time.

Thank you so much mylotbugs and goaskalice for the work you put into this site and do wish for a very happy 2016 and you too owlwings for creating this post. - create an official vision post for myLot - don't change the code as it works well - have a theme song, "don't worry"

Oooh! I love the idea of a 'vision' page! It's more or less the same as @pgntwo suggested only more general. I agree that messing with parts of the code is not often a good thing. I have no idea whether the creator(s) of the 2013 site are still around or whether they documented their code properly at all (many writers of code forget that bit!). Do you think that a constant background of Bob Marley'ish music would make some people lighten up a little?

@hereandthere Documenting our code was one of the very first things which was impressed on us in my Computer Studies course. Unfortunately, rather few programmers do it because it's not (or was not then) in a programmer's nature to do it and it takes a lot of time.

I think that Mylot is pretty good as it is right now. And thanks to the administration to take such good care of the Mylot users.

I agree, a thank you to mylot and @mylotbugs and @goaskalice is in order. I would like an easy way to search for members by name and to search for topics that interest me.

@hereandthere Tags should be 'universal' when you search on them. Do you find that they aren't? Can you give details and specific instances?

Even though I've had an account here for many years, I honestly haven't used the site a lot, so I'm not qualified to have any thoughts just yet. I'm just very grateful that there appears to be a good site with a lot of interaction by helpful people :)

I'd like to see the site more open to promoting our work on social networks and inviting more comments from readers not necessarily subscribed to the site already - readers who see our links on facebook and twitter can read our work but not comment on it without signing up as yet

@owlwings are non-members able to like posts when shared on social media accounts?

@hereandthere No, non-members can only read. They can, of course, 'like' the Facebook &c entry but that has no effect on MyLot. Just a view, however, is potentially earning revenue for MyLot and that will reflect in the earnings of the whole community.

I certainly will join you in wishing the Mylot team a Happy New Year. I would like any responses and comments on our own posts to remain at the top until we have at least acknowledged them. It can be quite a job tracking them down when there is a lot of traffic on a post.

@Jessicalynnt I can't help thinking of the Bubblews relocation to California (and then another mysterious relocation of their official business address, apparently for legal and financial reasons). On the other hand, if I was offered a trip to Overland Park to meet the guys, I wouldn't turn it down!

Keeping up with some of the shennanegans on here must be quite time-consuming for the board admins. For the work that they do keeping the site functioning well, I think everyone is grateful. Perhaps a section on developments in progress might be engaging for the serious myLot user to read now and then - no harm in blowing your own trumpet now and then!

Yes, I'd like to see a list of what is (and what is not) definitely proposed for the next update (not necessarily with any time constraints, of course). It might reduce (or at least answer) those fairly frequent questions about whether there is an app for MyLot!

@owlwings yes, an admin page where announcements, plans and updates are posted where we can check time to time, or direct other members to. at the moment, i remind myself to check goaskalice's and mylotbugs' profile every 1 or 2 weeks and read their responses and comments in other people's discussions.

Online platforms are having a tough time and I do hope MyLot will endure such times. Every member should be aware that a lot depends on each to enhance the standing of the site and we should think long term as a family sharing a destiny. Having been in few other sites, I can say MyLot looks quite different and welcoming. I have always been comment driven, so I sincerely hope to stay the course - give more than take. I feel I am in august company with few who ave been here for years through thick and thin - siva

I know that many of the online writing sites have failed pretty miserably in the last year. MyLot, however, was here pretty much before them all and, although it clearly had its financial difficulties in 2013, I think that the return of the original owners with their clear intention of reviving it with a new and flexible algorithm has a great deal going for it. You are right that many of the members feel that it is a 'family sharing a destiny' and, from what little communication I've had with the owners, I believe that they feel somewhat the same way.

@owlwings Some site owners, sadly, had a "hit and run attitude" and also some members and that is a recipe for disaster! No wonder reality stared at them over time - siva

Sure I will join you in doing that ,though it is a bit late .It is really someting that original Mylot owner made a comeback and make it a thrilling site again as many writing sites are going belly-up .Hope Mylot gets better and better .

That particular suggestion refers to reporting posts for violations but it has also been suggested elsewhere that a standard drop-down list of categories might be available when tagging one's discussions in order to make discussions of particular types easier to find. I think that may already be on the 'wants' list for the next upgrade.

You can, of course, post a link to a video (provided that it is relevant to the discussion and doesn't violate any other of the Guidelines). Multiple photos could be useful on occasion but would probably seriously affect the bandwidth of the site (which is already rather slow for some people).

MyLotBugs is the ID currently used by the owner and/or the programmer (I'm really not sure how many people are actually involved at Overland Park!).
