How do you eat cockles?

Many of us love cockles. Some of us like our cockles in dishes, such as Laksa, curry or stir fried. This afternoon, out of impulse, I bought a few cockles commonly sold in the supermarket. These are the ark clams. Many Singaporeans like to eat ark clams with Laksa. My little bag of ark clams cost less than fifty cents. I put it into boiling water, then pour away the hot water almost immediately. The hot water makes the ark clams open up. I just eat it half cooked with garlic chili sauce. That is the easiest and best way to enjoy ark clams. If I cooked the cockles a minute longer, the meat would be hard. The half cooked cockles are soft and tender.

In my family we don't often eat cockles. Usually we will have shrimps, crabs, fish as the seafood. Perhaps the meats for the cockles are little and most of them are the shells, so we are not very interested in them. My mom cooks the cockles like you do, but she will add the ginger when she boils the cockles.

@scheng1 I guess my mom to use ginger is not to kill the bacteria, but brings a better smell to the cockles. Here the ginger, green onion and garlic are often used when we are cooking.

I think your mum is right to use ginger. That will kill the bacteria that is in the cockles or the shells. For me, the garlic in the chili sauce serves the same purpose.

I did not know it's called cockle. Thanks for telling me that. Except when they come together with fried noodles, I seldom eat them. One of my aunts likes to eat them the way you did. I think some curry noodles have cockles as well. Other than these, I don't know how else to eat them.

Surprise to hear you say that. I thought only those who have high cholesterol will avoid them. I think you can try to have some cockles in your diet, because they are rich in some nutrients that you cannot get elsewhere.

@scheng1 Perhaps it's because my dad has high cholesterol, so we didn't eat that often since we were young. I don't really like the smell too. I avoided it because I was also afraid of Hepatitis B. I didn't know they are rich in some nutrients. Good to know that. Thanks.

If you have a chance to travel to Southeast Asia, you can try a bowl of laksa. it is essentially a noodle in spicy and rich coconut gravy. They add in cockles, and beancurd.
