Each year I like to keep track of how many books I have read.
In 2012 I read 35.
In 2013 I read 39.
In 2014 I again read 39.
This year I read 53. I read 4 of the Harry Potter books to my children and counted that in with my total. If it had not been for those 4 books though I would have only read 49 books. Still I am impressed with myself at reading this many books.
The last book I finished in 2015 was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling. It had 734 pages which is one of the thickest books I have ever read.
At the end of 2015 I was reading a book Called "Code Name : Santa" by Kayla Daniels. It is a Silhouette Intimate Moments book. I finished this two nights ago so I have already read one book this year. I am excited to see how many books I complete in 2016. My children and I are reading together then next book in the Harry Potter series which is the 5th one.

My year end is February 18th so I think I should get reading to get my numbers up by then. The only time I read up to 55 books in a year was when I was commuting by GO Bus (commuter bus between Ontario cities). That's when I did most of my reading. Now I'm lucky if I read 10 books in a year's time.

@patgalca Thats neat! When I was in 7th grade our reading teacher gave an incentive for us to keep track of the books we read. We had to write the author, book title and page numbers on an index card and give them to her. She collected them and after a certain point in the year towards the end whoever read the most books got to get a prize. My sister won the year before and was given some classic book she never bothered to read. I was given the option of what I wanted to chose and I told her a book about Ballet. I really liked that teacher. No one else did they were very rude to her. I have heard that not long after we graduated she passed away. She wasn't that old so I was sad to hear it.

Why is your year end February 18th? Is that when you started keeping track? I like on rare occasions when I get to ride with someone else and I can read while they are driving. Yesterday I finished reading the 5th book in the Harry Potter series to my daughter. It was 870 pages. It was called Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I have to go down in a few hours and get the next book in series from the library. Right now I'm catching up on mylot for a few minutes and finishing up watching a movie.

Now that is a good idea to keep up with how many books you read. I like that, and I think I will steal your idea, and make it my own. LOL I love to read, and it is a good time of the year to start keeping up with how many I read this year. I just never thought to count the books I read before.
I read so much more since I have a Paperwhite Kindle. It sure has been a good investment for me, and I love it.

Well I'm glad I posted this when I did so you can start keeping track now early on in the year. I tried starting a book yesterday called "Cat on the Scent" by Rita Mae Brown & Sneaky Pie Brown but I just could not get into it. It changed so much between characters and a cat and dogs thoughts that it was just hard to keep track who was saying what and what was going on. I have so many books I can read I just put this in my donation pile. I don't want to waste time on a book that isn't keeping my attention.

That is really great Shaggin.
I have many books on my computer in the free kindle app from Amazon, but never read them. Never have time with all going on as always.
It is so good for the kids for you to read to them and with them also. It will give them a life long love of books.
I hope all is going well there right now with your guests.
I used to read all the time, but no more, I do want to however.

Things are going good so far here with my guests. He set hunting traps just off my land. I wasn't very happy to hear that but at least it isn't right on my land. He caught a raccoon and a skunk. I hope he doesn't get the fox that have been living down back of my house for years. Personally I don't like trapping at all I think its a waste of an animal that isn't hurting me any.

@TiarasOceanView I remember years ago posting on here about him wanting to trap on my land. I remember someone calling him Elmer Fudd lol. Yes he traps them then kills them for their skin. I don't like when killing is a sport like that. Its wasteful. I hate animals being killed at all but over the years dating meat eaters and friends who hunt I accept people hunting for food.

I don't think 20 a year sounds bad at all. I think that is a lot more then most people I know would be able to accomplish in a year. You should try keeping track this year. The year has just started and you may be surprised how many you actually wind up reading in a year. I just started on a book today by Lilian Jackson Braun called "The Cat Who Went Bananas". I believe I have read another in the series in the past. I am on page 35 and having trouble staying focused on it.

@shaggin Maybe I will keep count. I've just finished "The Age of Reason" by Jean-Paul Sartre which is the first book of his Roads to Freedom trilogy, and I'm about a 1/3 of the way through "Nostradamus ate My Hamster" which is a sci-fi (ish) comedy by Robert Rankin. Should be finished that in a few days so that will be two down fairly quickly.
I tend to get slowed down when I read the classics as these can be quite weighty!!

I think that would be even more exciting if I read that much and got to see at the end of the year exactly how many I read. What do you do with them when you are done? I donate 90% of them. A few that I have actually paid more money for I put for a quarter in our yard sale in the summer. The money earned my children get to spend.

@Marty1 @Hatley My sister was a huge book lover when she was little and I was not. Then about 5th grade I had to do a book report at school and was forced to read a full book. I wash hooked from that day on. I read everything I could get my hands on. My love of books has never stopped. But my sister by high school stopped reading books. I find it so strange how we both changed so much in our book interests. My children love reading. I read to them literally since the day they were born and so far they still love reading and being read to which makes me so happy.

Never thought to count how many books I have read - interesting exercise and impressive targets - more than one a week in some cases there

I am not much into history books. I never could focus on them when I was in school. I think at this age I would be able to do better then when I was a teenager. I have read a few historical fiction books and enjoyed them a lot. I was very surprised to have liked them as I never thought I would.

Aww thats to bad that you never have time for it. I remember when my children were little nursing them and reading while I nursed them. Other then that the only time I had to read adult books to myself was when I was on the toilet lol. I have time after my children go to bed that I read to help me relax and sleep. Last night I finished a book called The Cat Who Went Bananas by Lilian Jackson Braun. It barely kept my attention. I was very bored with it. I do not think I will be reading any more books by her or in that series.

I usually will only read 2-3 books per year for pleasure. But I will read anywhere from 5-10 books per year that are business related. More often though, I read trade magazines and other work-related journals. So although I'm not reading as many books as you (good for you for reading that many!), I am still reading quite frequently! Just about every day, in fact!

My mother reads a lot but she reads magazines. I glance through them when she is done with them but it is really just skimming. I don't like reading short stories in them etc. I look to see whats new that might be interesting tips or yummy recipes. Right now I am on my 5th book this year. It is called Deviant : The Shocking True Story of Ed Gein the Original Psycho by Harold Schechter. I am a bit freaked out reading it. I can't wait to be done with it lol. I used to read books like this all the time. They were so creepy it was fascinating. Now its just creepy.

@shaggin I've never heard of that book, but it does sound interesting! I like to read creepy/freaky/horror/suspense types of books. Really, anything that keeps me on the edge of my seat and keeps the pages turning!

Thank you! Do you read or keep a list of books you read each year as well? I am reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling to my daughter. We are on Chapter 6 so far. This is a shorter book then the last one. This one is 652 pages. The last one in the series was 870 pages. I am also reading a book myself that will be the 4th book I have read this year. It is called Under the Boardwalk by Carly Phillips. I am really enjoying this one!

That's awesome! My resolution for this year to finish 99 classics (mainly classics), and I'm done with 2! I'm on the third one, Of Human Bondage, can't wait to finish that too!

Wow that is an amazing goal. I would only be able to do about half that amount. I have never heard of Human Bondage. The most recent classic I read was To Kill a Mockingbird and I loved it. I hated the sequel to it though. I never really cared to read classics before this past year. I read two in 2015. How many books do you average a year? I will be interested at the end of 2016 how many classics you accomplish.

@shaggin I tend to forget I'm reading a book, it's weird but it happens so often! Last year I actually did not read many! I don't remember, but I did complete the Millennium series by Stieg Larsson! Have you read his books? I was enraptured! I don't think I want to read the sequel to the three parts, as it's another writer, and I don't know if I'm ready to see if he did any justice to the original writer!
