About The Coffee Syrup and Why We Do Not Want It

In a discussion by @ScribbledAdNauseum I mentioned that we asked the sister-in-law not to send us coffee syrup. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it is coffee flavored syrup used in milk drinks to flavor milk. It seems to be from the North East, as I never had heard of it before she started sending it. Every year. Three, four, five bottles at a time. I must have moved a dozen bottles of it.It leaked all over everything. I gave three bottles to my sister. Hubby does not really do sweets, or drink milk. He probably liked it as a kid. I do not drink sweetened coffee. Occasionally we put it on ice cream and it is okay. She sends him other stuff. Often she donates money to charity, receives a blanket, or a calendar or something, and sends it as a gift to us. There is such a thing as too many calendars. She buys and wraps and sends Chourico (Portuguese sausage) and Carrot Relish from Hart's Turkey Farm. We eat both of those. If we ever in a million years run out of coffee syrup, I can order it online. She was cool with not sending it. Of course I blamed it all on the fact that I am diabetic. It makes a good excuse.

I haven't seen this syrup. I might like it. But not bottles and bottles of it.

One bottle, once in a while as a novelty, would have been okay. I just do not crave sweets that much. I think @andriaperry that a really strong solution of instant coffee in water would be the same as unsweetened coffee syrup.

If it was unsweeten I probably would too.

It's good to have a built-in excuse sometimes.

Since I do not crave it it is not a problem. I more or less did use that excuse as she has some "food preferences" that we respect when with her.

@GardenGerty Vince has Type 2 diabetes and doesn't have a really sweet tooth. We've made some changes and it doesn't impact on us much but sometimes we'll use the diabetes to get us out of a pickle. (no pun intended).

Excuses, excuses. Why not just be honest? Tact and honesty.

@celticeagle I would have liked it better if her brother had told her to quit sending it. I did tell her he does not drink it either. I did not tell her that I had roughly a dozen bottles before I started giving it away. Real honesty would be to tell her to quit sending stuff at all, if we want it we will order it. That would be really rude though.

Atleast she was okay with not sending it. My grandfather is diabetic and part of the reason why I want to be home more. I need to be able to cook more as we have been eating out far too much. It's not good for any of us, but I know that a homecooked healthier meal would do him a lot of good.

I am doing okay with the diabetes if I exercise and do not do too many sweets or breads. I have to remind hubby as well.

Every cupboard I emptied seemed to have some in it. It was nice, the first bottle. I was glad to save her a shopping trip. I have seen vanilla syrup of the same brand.

He grew up in Michigan, and also lived in Rhode Island. She lives in New Hampshire. It is basically like Hersheys Chocolate syrup or Quik Strawberry. In a plastic squeeze bottle.

The Portuguese sausage is good to prepare the Portuguese soup called "Caldo Verde". I like it in winter.

Aha, someone who knows what it is. In the part of the country where we live now, you can get Mexican choriso, and Spanish Chourizo, but hubby says it just is not the same as his Portuguese Chourico, and he would know. I will have to look up Caldo Verde. Hubby likes it in stuffed clams (stuffies) and he makes a sandwich filling with peppers and onions and tomato sauce.

@GardenGerty Your hubby is right, the Mexican and Spanish are not the same as the Portuguese Chourico. The basic ingredients for caldo verde are potatoes, kale, chourico, olive oil and salt. I had this soup in the city of Porto (Portugal) the day of the celebration of the St. John, it seems it's a tradition to serve this soup on that day.

I made a poke cake that was dark chocolate and put this in the poked holes. We froze most of the cake. It was good but we just do not eat that way usually. If he had wanted it I would have found it online.

That could have been a difficult conversation if you had not been able to blame it on being a diabetic. I'm glad that it worked out that way so no feelings were hurt and now...no more coffee syrup

Yeah, her intentions are good and she loves to do stuff for Christmas. Hubby and I neither one really enjoy boxing stuff up and mailing it, so I have told him that we shall order from Amazon for gifts for her next year because they will do all of that. I do that for my daughter's family. I hate to see her spend money on things we do not appreciate fully. She also regifts stuff she is given by friends that she will not eat. I really appreciated the mustard pickle relish she sent. It balances out.

It tastes like overly sweet thick coffee. In moderation it would not hurt, but it has a lot more sugar than I want or need.

Really it is not fair to her to have to make a special trip to buy it either. I think when we want to give we sometimes go overboard.
