If all the writing sites went under would you open a business?

For many of the users here they have written on online sites for a while. If they all just happen to go out of business would you go and work for yourself? I have read some users here make things and sell them they do it like they do this for extra cash. With the extra source of income gone would you try to work for yourself and open a business?

No, I probably wouldn't because I don't really make a lot online to where I would notice any difference if they went under. I just write and interact for the fun of meeting new people.

I would notice the difference in pocket change. Its enough to be able to eat out more often which is more convenient than bringing lunch with me.

I wish you luck starting one's own business is not easy but it brings you joy to do what you want and have that freedom to do as you please.

myLot is the only "writing" site that I visit, and I consider it more like a kind of club to share things and have fun with friends than like an earning site. Are you speaking of an online business ? If I had a very good idea/niche, probably yes. I missed a good opportunity to become an Internet millionaire in the 1990's. I would not like to miss this kind of opportunity twice in my life.

@lokisdad I do not think that I would open something home based. The opportunity that I missed in the 90's had not cost a cent. I was involved in one of the first and more important French websites that I left... a few months before Yahoo bought it. It was before the explosion of the Internet bubble, and a few friends became millionaires when the site was sold. I am not sure that this can happen twice in a life, but I can dream.

Yes primarily but they can also be home based but if you had enough for a business with a commercial space you could share that too.

I don't 'need' the little money I make doing thigns online - if they all went away - no problem, I'd rejoin life again!

@lokisdad I could spent time on CrowdTap or Swagbucks - I do a lot of 'research'.

I have had my own business. Writing on Mylot is a bit of a hobby, not a job. I have a relative who is an aspiring writer. Some would be much better off financially if they would first find a job to earn a reasonable income and then 'play' at writing.

this is true. I once looked up a ghost writer's page to see what they do and what the cost of their services was etc.It was a 6-12 month long process depending on what the book was needing done to finish it. So if you had most of it done and needed minimal corrections and work done to it maybe 6 months and the cost was $35,000 minimum.

@buttheadface932 oh I do. But I know someone who has written a mediocre novel, published by a rinks dink publishing house who thinks he can just sit around waiting for the royalties to come in. For every wealthy, skilled writer, there are thousands who should not give up their day job.

Do you mean to say that writing is 'play'? Are you aware that many writers are uite rich as their skills are valued highly by the industry?

Sure! In fact I consider this a business. All you need for a writing business is a writing portfolio, basically. Also, a website and writer's resume are preferable.

my business is freelance writing. I don't think I would open any different kind of business if there were no writing opportunities to be found.

If all of the writing sites went under, I'd probably keep doing what I'm doing. Perhaps I'd post a bit more often on Facebook. I'm not sure if I'd be more aggressive about my speaker restoration "business" or not.

i suppose it could be seen like that. if people don't go and visit and write the sites probably don't make money to stay a float.

I already own a business venture. Writing is purely for fun. It is a very creative exercise where everything is possible. I would just stick to blogging if there is nothing else.

It would be hard to start a business from scratch if all the sources of income dried up. I think it's wise to have multiple sources and types of income and I do, so I probably wouldn't worry about starting something new. Things do happen. There are fewer writing opportunities now than there used to be. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, then you don't have to worry about dropping it!
