They market phones now specifically for young children. I guess that is the trend now..not for show, but for parents peace of mind etc. My 14 y/o has a cell..but it stays home, does not go to school etc. Since I do not have a landline I wanted another phone in the house in case of emergencies or if she needs to reach for other reasons.

I think it is fine as long as you get them one with prepaid minutes and ones that you can only call certain numbers one.

my son is 11 and i have recently given him an old one of mine so i can let him know if i am going to be late to get him after school etc. my daughter bought her first one for herself when she was 12 for the same thing.plus she was being bullied so it was a safty thing for her

Depends on the situation I guess. Generally speaking I don't see it as a problem, but I'd worry about them costing me a small fortune. I've heard horror stories of kids talking excessively and costing their parents hundreds of dollars.
I'd like to know that my kids could always get a hold of me if they needed to.

My son is in 1st grade and we have though of gettinf him one. You never know what could happen. We would not buy him a regular phone, rather the one that has the 4 preprogrammed buttons so that he couldn't call China on it!
