How often do you donate blood? Tips on donation.

I donated my blood recently for the first time in my life. We have a blood donation group at the college and I was always trying to hide from them whenever they asked the students for blood. But about a month ago they 'caught' me and made me donate for the first time. I was a little bit afraid on first but there was nothing to fear about it. Actually I felt very good after donation. Its like I have saved someone's life. And I have learned that its good for our body too. Our body will generate fresh blood to substitute the donation. I will try to donate my blood once in every 3 months as it is the prescribed time period between two donations. Also you should be careful while the donation. Make sure the needles and syringes used are opened from its cover in front of you to prevent reusage.

Good for you for donating. I have never donated because I figure being on medication I wouldn't be eligible.

It depends on the medication. I'm on blood pressure meds now. However once the BP is stabilised, a donation can be made. Medication which thins blood such as Warfarin or anti-clotting agents like aspirin or clopidogrel would probably make you ineligible to donate, obviously because these could result in excessive bleeding in the recipient if they had an operation.

When I was in college, I did donate blood. Back then, it was more of a fun reason that I donated. I would donate those days, because the college would be off and also, I would get some good fruit juice at the end of it. Later, after college, I once had to donate to save the life of one of my friend's sister (who was four and had fallen off the roof). That day, I realized that I was there for good, but the donations I did earlier were for wrong reasons - instead of fun or the fruit juice glasses, it should have been the "save someone's life". Anyways, I cannot donate any more today because of my own health issues and medications since 2000. I completely agree with you that in today's scenario, you must have fresh syringes and needles every time you think to donate. In case you are too good and noble, you should also take your own set with you instead of burdening the people who are collecting it.

I have donated blood couple of times during college blood donation drives. I was skeptical at first as I was not sure how safe it was. Later I got over it.

I have gone through exactly the same way on blood donation as you mentioned. I think everybody does fear at first but they will get over it after experiencing it.

It is good for your own health and for others who will be saved by your donation. I can't donate blood because my blood pressure is always lower than normal.

You're right, it's good for our health as our body generates fresh blood to substitute the donated blood.

In the United States the Red Cross handles blood donations and they are experts. I have donated quite often in the past.

My Dad always donated blood. When I was in college, I tried three times and was turned away each time. I either didn't weigh enough or had a runny nose and they thought it might be a cold. Eventually I stopped trying.

@aju007 Actually they wouldn't accept my blood anymore for other reasons. I'm definitely not too small, but my health would cause them to turn me away.

lol you didn't have to hide from them! If they asked, you do have the right to say no I mean it is your body and your blood! But nah I have never donated blood. I have thought about it before but I feel a bit weird about it. I don't do very well with sitting to get a blood test let alone sitting there for awhile to donate it.

@VivaLaDani13 I don't even have enough blood to donate in the first place. Even vampires leave me alone for my well being.......except the mosquitoes.

I am O negative. I donate blood as much as I can and as soon as I can. It makes me feel good to know that I can help others. I have donated about 6 to 7 times so far. That is saving or helping at least twenty-one other people.
