Lol, seems like some people ie rock stars can get away with all sorts of behavior, doesn't it?
It pays to be an artist, one seems to be able to get away with many sorts of... idiosyncrasies.

Depending upon the suit, ties can be formal or casual. Sometimes a bow tie is more formal, like the cute ones worn with tuxedos, but if the fabric is more casual, then so is the bow tie.

One is in a bow at the neck, and the other hangs down in front of the man. Both of these you have to tie differently.

I didn't see the show so I can't be sure, but normally events of this type would have a dress code and for men that's the so-called 'black tie' - which means a black bow tie with a black tuxedo (also known as a 'dinner jacket' and white shirt. Another dress code you sometimes see for weddings is 'white tie' which means a tail coat suit and a white bow tie.
