Today I looked at some pictures from Golden Globe Awards and it seems that men all wore bow ties rather than ties. I wonder what's the difference between the tie and bow tie?

When you wear a tuxedo or a black elegant man suit, you always wear a bow tie, that is the one in your picture. The tie is what you wear with a normal man suit.

I just learned that wearing bow tie is much more official than tie.

@youless Nobody should wear a bow tie during the day, only a tie. But during a soiree with a tuxedo it is a must.

You usually wear a bow tie when "Formal dress required" is written on an invite card. It does not mean that you would be welcomed with faded jeans and a bow tie, except if you are a rock star.

Lol, seems like some people ie rock stars can get away with all sorts of behavior, doesn't it? It pays to be an artist, one seems to be able to get away with many sorts of... idiosyncrasies.

I'm pretty sure that a bow tie is considered more formal in certain cases, and it's the type of tie worn to a high-class social gathering/party. Of course, there are people who wear bow ties casually on a daily basis.

@youless Doctors often wear bow ties as they are more hygienic than longer ones.

Depending upon the suit, ties can be formal or casual. Sometimes a bow tie is more formal, like the cute ones worn with tuxedos, but if the fabric is more casual, then so is the bow tie.

@youless Good. Fairly useless information, but you never know when it might come in handy.

You use bow tie with Tuxedo, and regular tie with regular suit. But you never use bow tie in regular suit.

Thanks for asking the question. I have learned something new today. I didn't know bow tie is worn when it's more formal.

One is in a bow at the neck, and the other hangs down in front of the man. Both of these you have to tie differently.

I think a bow tie is more formal wear. a tie is what you wear to work or when you go someplace nice.

I didn't see the show so I can't be sure, but normally events of this type would have a dress code and for men that's the so-called 'black tie' - which means a black bow tie with a black tuxedo (also known as a 'dinner jacket' and white shirt. Another dress code you sometimes see for weddings is 'white tie' which means a tail coat suit and a white bow tie.

That means to say that wearing bow tie is better in these events?
