It's 12.40 am, and I'm feeling sleepy.....

This is an out of the blue post for me.....but I felt like posting something today so here it is. I've been watching TEDtalks and philosophical videos and they were quite interesting and good. Who doesn't love to think? People have so many great insights about how the world works.....
Just yesterday I came across one: about choosing between two hard choices. Why is choosing hard? Say between two jobs with equal prospects in the world; equally valued but qualitatively different views of the society regarding them. So which one would you choose? Would you become a cricket player, or a mechanical engineer.....you can be either one because you have that capability.
So this is a hard choice, and probably because there isn't a best one. It's not our fault that we find it difficult to choose, we are not stupid you know. What we do is try and compare between the two.....mark off the advantages and drawbacks of each career, and simply tally in the end. Or we don't go into all that at all, just choose the safest option. But that leads us to wrong decisions. Even if you increase the pay of one by much more, still doesn't make one job better than the other. So we are presented with a conundrum.
It's because we are trying to measure them like we compare numbers. The value of a job is mistaken to be like a numeral, which it's not. One job cannot be better than another with almost the same value. So we have to create reasons for ourselves to make us worthy of a job. Simply taking any reason society throws at us is not going to establish what we are worth. If society says that cricket has physical risks, and you abide by this information to direct your life course, you are letting society dictate the story of your life. Instead create your own reasons, identify with yourself. Ask------ what are you made to do in life? I can be a good cricketer than an engineer because.....
So in a way, hard choices make us who we are in our penultimate form. It brings about self revelation. The hard choice I had to make a moment ago was whether to post this on mylot or just to go to sleep. I chose the former because the back of my mind has been nagging me to share this with my friends here since yesterday. So I'm satisfied now that I've made the right choice! Okkk, goodnight everyone! Bed is calling! God, it's now 1 am.....*yawn*

Sometimes, things are a lot easier than we think. Let's say I like Italian food and also Chinese food. What should I eat? Why not eat one one day and the other the other day?
Two things I want to do in life, do one and than try the other? Why not? Pleasant dreams!

In decisions like these, of course there is a chance to do both. You are right, in most of the cases we can try both and then decide. However, the person falls in a trap when he has the financial supply or time to do only one. That is when a choice becomes hard.
Thanks for sharing your interesting views.

@ria1606roy True, there are times when it is a more difficult decision for various reasons.

@1hopefulman yes.....and neither is better than the other. At that point, we have to choose the one which suits best to what we are.

yes true....in the back of our mind we create reasons for choosing one, and we are hardly aware of those reasons sometimes. If we are able to mould ourselves into that choice, we ultimately think it's the right path we are on. Not because the choice was itself better.

that's right, I finally went to bed after that but really, the ted talks are great! Next time I face an impossible decision, this way of thinking might make it easier.

@arthurchappell really? Well this should do it.
Here's a talk that could literally change your life. Which career should I pursue? Should I break up -- or get married?! Where should I live? Big decisions like these can be agonizingly difficult. But that's because we think about them the wrong way, says

you can go to and look up different speakers on philosophy. They are very interesting and enlightening. The lecture on hard choices was given by the speaker Ruth Chang. Just search her in the website and you'll get the video.

There are times also when you really don't feel like you have a chance. I always wanted to be a Vet but I fell in love, got married and had two kids. Six years into the marriage he cheated and I was left to raise two kids alone. I had to find a job that would support me and my two kids and although I always enjoyed my job, it wasn't my first choice as I couldn't afford to go to college and raise kids also. Plus the only college that offered vet courses was in another city that was about 8 hours away. I wasn't brave enough at the time to uproot my kids and myself from friends and family to go back to school.

In that situation it wasn't an easy choice to make..... I understand that you had to support your family. It's cruel that you weren't left with an option. I understand that you had gone through a tremendous amount of pain. But I don't think you ever regretted that decision, ergo you have two amazing kids

very true A person is seldom made to fulfill both reasons whole-heartedly, otherwise there wouldn't be any choice in the world.
