Seven childhood memories

I was inspired to take up this challenge by @Maggs224, 1. I remember my dad's gooseberry bushes, looking for the fruits that had turned translucent and were slightly soft and ready to eat. So delicious. 2. I remember when my two cousins came to stay in the school holidays and my sister, cousin and I had to sleep top and tail in the same bed. 3.I remember my dad taking about 10 children from our road swimming at a pool 30 minutes away in a funny big green van, that was his company car at the time. Nowadays we would have to have had seats and seatbelts, but rules were looser then. 4. I remember my naughty cousin, who is 2 years older than me, deciding to drive this same van. She would have been about 12 and though she had no key, she got the brake off and coasted down the slight hill that was our road. Luckily she managed to get the brake on before meeting the main road! 5.I can remember being teased at school for wearing a pair of said cousin's hand me down shoes, which had a tiny heel . All the other girls wore Clarks sandals and shoes. 6. I remember eating cheese pie at grammar school and throwing it up from the train window on the way home. I would not eat cheese and egg pie for years afterwards! 7. I remember when my mum gave birth at home to my youngest sister. I decided to take her a pot of tea, only to find that though I had warmed the pot, used fresh water as taught, that I had forgotten to put any tea in the pot! I was only eight ! Have you memories to share?

What a fabulous list, I can identify with some of your list. My dad had Gooseberry bushes at his allotment and I loved them when they went soft because they were so sweet to eat. I think they were a special variety of dessert gooseberry. I also remember top and tailing with a visiting cousin. I have really enjoyed reading your childhood memories thank you so much for joining in and sharing Maggs :D

@maggs224 Isn't it odd that our families used the same funny names?

This was a fun challenge and it make you really think of some good times when you were kids. I loved this and yours are great. Your memories are great. Too bad you threw up and had to be teased at school. .

@Auntylou Yes this could be very hard growing up like this. But a lot of people didn't always have work or money when their children were growing up. My grandma would visit for 3 months a year and at this time all she did was sew. She made us a lot of clothes. I had to wear dresses or skirts to school so she made sure I had enough for the year. She would make the shirts for my brothers to wear to school. At times I hated to wear the same clothes all the time to school. But back then the kids were not so fashion minded.

We were rather poor in a very affluent village. I always had hand me downs from my cousin while nearly everyone else had new clothes

When your two cousins came to stay, did they sleep in the middle? If so, then that would be a full house, but if it were just you and your sister, then I don't see why you'd have slept across the top and bottom of the bed instead of side by side. Aww, that's sweet about the tea and too bad your forgot to steep anything in it. I'm sure your mom was blessed just the same. I wrote one of these along with several others of us. Many of us used the same tag, but not everyone did. I think one of the main tags was childhood memories, but other tags were used also. I've put them below. A few just used memories. If you want to check any you may have missed.

I can't remember exactly how many of us slept in one bed. Will have to check with my older sister!

I remember when there were no rules about seat-belts, crowding lots of people and kids into a car.

@Auntylou It was all harmless fun really. We didn't have such powerful cars then either.

When I was at uni ,visiting friends in a nearby village, about eight of us got into a mini. We were stopped by the local policeman, who just told us not to do it again!

I couldn't sleep without my special lovely pillow. So where ever i went, I had to bring it. my mom made the beautiful cover for it, so didn't make me ashamed because the pillow was already worn.

My sister's little girl always had to have her "softie", a piece of cotton muslin. One day she came to visit and pulled my white headscarf from my head, thinking I had taken her softie!

I will have to think on this, as I tend to be negative when I am tired, which I am right now. I have not posted anything today so that may be something to come up with.

I don't remember much before the age of 9. I did write 10 episodes of "Memories of My Father" on BB and lost 9 of them when the site closed down. I might try this challenge.

These are all nice memories! The driving van was quite dangerous, glad that your cousin managed to stop the van. I hope no one got hurt. I bet your cousin will always remember that too. I still haven't really sit down and think of my childhood memories yet. I hope I will be able to get seven from my memory.

Great memories - I have a few similar ones . We used to eat the goooseberries, but they were in my grandad's garden, and we rattled around in the back of my Dad's van too. (I fell out one day!). We also slept top to tail when cousins came to stay.
