Compass orientation for living quarters- how do you feel?

Does anyone else consider the orientation of their house or apartment when hunting fora place to live? My boyfriend and I are hunting for a place together. Who here is from the sunny southern U.S., do you prefer to avoid those hot southern-facing rooms? If you're in cold regions of the north do you choose a south facing backyard for increased warmth? What about the east-west orientation, does that affect your choice?
It's a relatively insignificant detail (but I like to cover all the bases), but are there any benefits in which direction an Austin home faces?

I think it's wise to do that, when my late father bought our house, he considered the orientation of the sun, he wanted the house to be facing the morning sun or the east.

yes. It depends on which hemisphere you're in, and how close to the equator you are, too.
