Baby dies in unattended running vehicle

United States
January 15, 2016 6:32am CST
A Walker County, GA grandmother left her 13-month-old grandson in her running vehicle while she went to visit friends. The baby was asleep so she didn't want to disturb him. Instead, she left the car running with the heat on. More than 5 1/2 hours later when she finally went to the car little Shadoe Braxton Pate was not breathing and unresponsive. The boy was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. The grandmother, 47-years-old, sat and talked to friends for 5 1/2 hours. The friends told her to check on the baby and all the grandmother did was look out of the window. They say it wasn't possible for her to actually see the child in car from the house. Obviously this case is still under instigation and the grandmother could be charged in this case. The obvious question is why. Why did she leave a baby alone in a car for that length of time? Who in their right mind would allow their own grandchild to die from being exposed to extreme heat for a long period of time? This sounds very strange to me, there has to be more to this story.

I agree, there must be more to the story. Still no one in their right mind would do such a thing.

Maybe she wasn't in her right mind, they didn't even say her name, I wonder why?

@just4him The baby's name was stated. No reason not to mention the grandmother's name.

@AbbyGreenhill Usually names are withheld to notify relatives. She might also have wanted it withheld.

Even if the child was sleeping, why didn't she carry the carseat in the home!

@AbbyGreenhill Yes, I've seen stories about leaving a child in the car occasionally in my area on the news. The most recent was a mom leaving her kid in the car at the mall. Claims to need to use the restroom, and that restroom visit was literally 40 mins because she also went "shopping".

@AbbyGreenhill It saddens me greatly when I hear of things like that. Babies and young children are so precious her daughter or son must hate her at the moment.

I have the same question with you. For the last summer in China, a chain accidents happened. Some parents left their children in the car which is exposed in the hot sun and finally the children went through their toughest time in the world going to the heaven. A chain of events! It's hard to believe! Life is not easy, let's take care who we care.

People have shut off their brains. I'd also like to know why one of the friends she was visiting didn't go open that door. Several adults failed this baby, not just one.

It is odd, there has not been any mention of the parents, or why the grandmother had the baby.

I believe she should be charged, nobody in their right mind leaves a baby unattended in a car for 5 1/2 hours. Please keep us updated @AbbyGreenhill

If the friends say they suggested she check on the baby, why did they not check after a little while.

That is a good question and since the friends knew the baby was in the car when didn't they force the issue. They might be at fault also.
