Back in about 2000 or 2001 my youngst son on a bike was hit by a drunk driver and flew up in the air coming down he landed in the street and luckily he had the helmet on I had bought him. This was a HIT and RUN as the guy driving took off but the police were able to get a good description of his car and him. He was caught within 15 minutes of the accident. The police said if my son hadn't had that helmet on he would have ended up with severe head injuries as it was he had injuries to his leg and his hand. He was in the hospital for a week and had 2 operations on his hand and fingers, luckily he wasn't injured worse then that. Although he lost some work time over this and had to use crutches for a few weeks also.

It sounds as if he was quite lucky in that he didn't have worse injuries. I'm glad that the driver was caught.

@just4him My son was very lucky indeed and the man that hit him who was drunk was sent to prison as he had a suspended license, no insurance and had many issues like DWI against him. He needed to be sent away.

@mommaj Yes he must have been an alcholic and we found out he had many driving tickets for this agaist him. He was sent to prison finally before he killed someone. He did know because my son was laying in the street by the curb and this same car turned around and was aiming for him when some people helped him out of the street and away from this maniac.

I am sorry your son went through this, luckily he is ok today. When I was age 12, back in the 70s,, I was hit by a car just standing in a parking lot by a drunk driver. It is a miracle I survived. I suffered injuries to my left leg and had surgeries on it as I spent 4 months in the hospital. Luckily I was able to walk again.

@Marilynda1225 at that time helmets were mandatory under a certain age where we lived so that was a good thing. Yes he could have been injured much worse so that was one good thing.

Wow, I am glad he didn't suffer more injuries. I think because we don't live in town, my son won't wear a helmet, but he doesn't ride his bike much either.

Wearing helmets is compulsory in Australia now and has been for some years. There was a lot of opposition to it in the beginning but they do save lives. I'm glad your son wasn't too badly hurt.

@JudyEv I wish it was compulsory in every State in the US but it isn't. It is only compulsory in some States and some only under a certain age. The helmets do save lives. He was out of work for awhile and had to undergo an operation on his arm and lots of stitches in his leg walking on crutches also for a time.

@Marcyaz he was lucky. These type of things seem to be happening more and more. Something needs to be done about a person who drinks and drives.

@HazySue My son was very lucky. They do seem to be happening more and more if only the courst wouldn't be so lenient on drunk driving it might help.

@Marcyaz I agree. It seems that the more crime the less consequences. I think the system is more worried about the rights of the perpetrator than the victim.

I'm so happy your son was wearing his helmet! Not a lot of people these days wear them. Mostly kids and teenagers. I guess because they are still thinking it is uncool to be wearing one. I just wish they would learn how much they would regret it if they were to have an accident doing major damage to themselves!

@garymarsh6 The drunk went to prison because he had a number of DWI's against him and why they let him get off so easy before I have no idea but this time he went and did the wrong thing and the police were anxious to get him for a hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident,

I'm glad to hear your son is alright and they caught the person. My daughter was hit by two cars and dragged two miles. The first car stopped and called 911 but the second car that dragged her never stopped and the police haven't them yet but I believe they will in time.
