Healthcare in America

On October 31,2015 my daughter was hit by 2 cars and dragged 2 miles. She spent months in the hospital. The injuries she sustained from the accident cause our family to move from where we were living into something that was more disability accessible. The University of Michigan told me to days before Christmas that they will be releasing my daughter on January 5,2016 with open wounds, with only to weeks to try to find appropriate living quarters. When January 5,2016 come around I still hadn't found any where for us to stay so the hospital extended her stay for two days. Even though they extended her stay I was unsuccessful in finding a place for us to stay so the University of Michigan hospital tried to release my daughter to a homeless shelter with open wounds and all. The woman from the shelter said she would accept us to come there but wouldn't recommend it because it wasn't a place for people needed medical care like my daughter did because the shelter was not the most sterile place in the world. To make a long story short I end up paying for a hotel room to make sure my daughter had a place to heal. The healthcare in the U.S is just horrible for the poor and middle class.

It's really a shameful state of affairs here in this country. Hope your daughter is mending well.

That's an awful state of affairs - it wouldn't happen in the UK. She wouldn't be released from hospital if she still needed medial care, or she would be found a place in a convalescent home.

Hospitals hands are tied sometimes by what the insurance companies will pay and they should have been helping you to find a place to help your daughter recover better

What an ordeal. I hope your daughter is mending well. That can be a problem here too; people getting discharged from the hospital without a proper place to go. Usually the hospital social worker can recommend the services available in the community though. Take care, I hope things get better.
