In 1966,we lived in a remote part of west Texas where my dad was what many would refer to as a tenant farmer. We lived on the famer's land in his house, and my dad did the jobs on the farm for him. plowing, milking, feeding whatever was deemed necessary. The life of a tenant farmer is not easy or prosperous. I can assure you. I have gone to bed many times, as well as my siblings. Food was more of a comfort than a necessity, it seemed. That is why it became necessary for our family to move to where I presently reside in central Texas. My parents saw the need to relocate, so they borrowed ten dollars. Ten dollars put gas I a 1957 Ford Fairlane, which was loaded with everything we could load in it , including one of our boxer puppies named Sockie. Two adults, three kids, and a boxer puppy traveled right at 300miles in that old Ford, Our food was potato chip sandwiches. My Mom bought a loaf of bread and a bag f potato chips for us to eat on the way In 1966,gas was less than 20 cents a gallon, bread was about the same price, and a large bag of potato chips, if I remember correctly 29 cents.

You seem to have stopped your tale in mid-stream. What happened when you reached your destination? Did your father get work?

It was a long and hard trip, but you made it. Life was harder, but easier back in time. Now everything is so expensive.

That was the beginning of the history of many people in my family. I don't feel it as s hard now, but I do feel it is a valuable part of my roots. Because of this upbringing, I have lived a much more totally self reliant life. I have depended on no one other than an occasional family member for assistance. I am stronger because of this.

@meltean59 I always say to my niece that what it is important in life is not to have to depend on someone.
