Facing Death

My girlfriend works in the leasing office at an apartment complex, and there is a resident there who is not in the best of health. A year ago, he had some type of seizure while in his car, and drove into a lake. Luckily, a maintenance man and mailman saw it happen and were able to save the guy. But because of that episode, and because of his continued bad health, and because he lives alone, he asked the leasing office if they could do wellness checks on him once a week at his apartment. This past Sunday, my girlfriend went to do the weekly check on him, and knocked on his door. There was no answer. After knocking repeatedly with no results, she tried calling his cell phone. No answer. Seeing his car in the parking lot, she knew he was home. Worried, she called the police to come assist. When the police arrived, they told her that without a search warrant, or without probably cause, they couldn't enter the apartment first, but could go in behind her if she went first, since she was authorized by the tenant to enter the apartment. So, upon opening the door, my girlfriend knew immediately what they were facing, as the smell of death was so horrendous she could hardly breathe. But, she had to go inside in order for the police to follow her in, so she took just enough steps inside to let the police in, and then she bolted out the door, leaving the cops to discover what they already knew they were facing. Have you ever had to face death? This was the first time my girlfriend experienced something like this in her life, and she's naturally very shook up about it.

The image of my mom after she passed is stuck in my mind @moffittjc I can't get rid of it. I'd much rather have an image of her as she was when she was alive and much younger.

Maybe mine isn't as bad as that @moffittjc mom was 99 and unresponsive and simply passed away while I watched, I didn't know what to do at the time.

I feel so terrible bad for your girlfriend. It is so sad what happen, and nobody should have to die or be sick alone.

It just was not a good situation all around. The best I can do is just be there for her and help her cope and come to terms with what she faced.

She's pretty shaken up still, even a day later.

Oh how sad @moffittjc . Poor guy. And I can just imagine your girlfriend's response. That would give you nightmares for quite a while. It never happened to me; unless you count critters in that. But no humans.

I haven't experienced that either. Not something I ever look forward to facing. As for my girlfriend, she is coping pretty well, but she has been hugging me extra tight these last couple of days.

That is very sad. And obviously not a nice thing for your friend to have to go through. He should have asked for someone to check on him more often.

My girlfriend and the other staff she works with were doing it as a courtesy. It's not something they normally do, so there was really no precedent for them to know what was or wasn't appropriate for a timeframe for checking up on the guy.

@JudyEv I wondered about that, whether or not there was some agency or nurse or something that was supposed to be looking after the guy. I guess there really is no way to know for sure now.

@moffittjc Fair enough. It was up to the guy really unless he was on the books of some sort of agency. It's a shame it fell to your girlfriend to have to do this.

Wow that is an awful thing to face. I think they should've checked on him more than once a week as you may never know. May he rest in peace.
