Hitting the Thrift Stores

My friend Kathy from Connecticut has been visiting me here in Ocala. We have been doing some serious thrift shopping. We started at the Hospice Thrift Store and I found a really nice pink jacket for $2.50. We then went to another thrift /consignment store where I got two mugs with angels on them. Today we went out to breakfast and then hit more thrift stores. I got a brand new pad for my chair on the lanai and two place mats for my dining room table. We headed to the Salvation Army where I got two cook books for $1 and then to the Humane Society Thrift Store where I got an Anchor Hocking 8 inch square glass baking dish and a small aluminum tray. All in all, I have got some great stuff and spent next to nothings. Inexpensive, it's a very good thing. Do you enjoy thrift store shopping?

I enjoy thrifting probably a lot more than I should. I haven't had a "proper" trip out in months because I've been busy working on decluttering our apartment. I was actually just debating the possibility of sneaking a good outing in next month, since I have a few audits to complete in the big city and some of the locations are quite close to thrift stores. If I do that, though, I'm going to have to finish the remainder of my decluttering before then. Good thing I've got about three weeks before the scheduled trip, huh?

@BelleStarr We got off to a great start today! Three big boxes of stuff went out the door, including the artificial tree we've had for the last 10 years. And I got a few big pieces of baby furniture out, too. I'm getting to the point where I'm going to be in "offload everything!" mode before too long.

lol It sounds like the perfect scenario for a good thrift shop run, now that you have made more room for the great treasures you will find.

Unfortunately we do not have thrift stores, at most we can visit antique shops that also sell used items, but they are never very inexpensive.

@BelleStarr I should go visit the antique stores in Italy, the ones closer to the border, they surely have more reasonable prices.

I'd much rather thrift shopping than any other sort. It's always great fun to pick up a bargain or two.

@BelleStarr It is, I usually snag my best friend and drag her with me. She takes one side and I take the other. She knows my style better then I do, so I trust her to pick out good things for me

I have only been to the Salvation Army thrift store once, and its was in the past year. I was out with a friend who knew that I had not ever been there and we went thru it. I found a new purse but it was on a display and all of the straps to the purses were intertwined and I didn't buy it because I couldn't get it untangled. She saw me eyeing it and she got it off of the hook and she ended up buying it. It was really cute and it still had the tags on it so somebody dropped off a new item-apparently that occurs regularly in our town from what I am told. You got a lot of great finds, and it sounds like you had a lot of fun in the process.

No, I don't shop at thrift stores. Once in Scottsdale, I went to a consignment shop after breakfast, and saw a Chanel blouse with the price tag still on it. The original price was $999.99 and I had seen it in a shop a few months before in NYC. I snapped it up for $99. I still have it up north, although I am sick of wearing it. I may give it to my son's girlfriend or daughter-in-law. I do love antique shops. They abound in Palm Beach!

@SIMPLYD Of course they were brand new and yes some of the prices were indeed discounted but not enough to be tempting.

I like going to them. The last time I went was when my sister in law came to visit and we went thrift store shopping. I bought a couple of books for only a dollar or a little more.

I shop the thrift stores too, I always look for interesting beads to take apart, clean and use them on the wire that I put on top of my slate for hanging them up.

Yes but since we downsized and live in an apartment for financial reasons, I've had to get rid of so much- I would have to find a place for everything except clothes, etc. I do love the thrill of the hunt in those places though.

I am not letting this home have any clutter so I was very judicious in what I actually bought, it was all things I really need and that don't take up much space.

@BelleStarr It's tough though when you like stuff- I am partial to antiqu-y things and would have to consider for awhile, but I love seeing- 'the find' at great prices!
