Do you let other people's ignorance make you doubt yourself?

When I arrived in Amsterdam yesterday I hopped on the train from the airport to the city's central station. I do this a couple of times a month so it's not a route that I really need to check. I knew it was a direct train and that it ended at the station so I didn't need to pay too much attention.
I got up to get off and heard some non-locals trying to work out if they were in the right place.
"This isn't Central Station" said the confident one who wanted everybody to know he'd been to Amsterdam before. "Amsterdam Central station is underground".
Now that just isn't true and I was about to tell him and his friends that it was indeed both the station and the end of the line. As I got off, the guy was still holding court.
"It's a few more stops to Central", he said.
I got off, made absolutely sure of what I already absolutely knew - that I was in the right place - and then went back to tap on the window and tell the other guys it was the right place. As I walked off down the platform, they were still sitting there waiting to go to Central despite already being there.
Amsterdam's airport station is indeed underground. Amsterdam Central is not. I wonder how long it was before they got off. Keep in mind they were arriving in the city - not like the many who only come to get stoned and who might have had an excuse for being a bit slow.

I spend my life doubting myself due to the ignorance of other people. But that's what comes from being a worrier! I hope those people didn't end up going back the way they came. :)

Sometimes I doubt myself, then I rethink it! I think I might not have bothered telling them at all, but your're a nice person and did the right thing!

sometimes it's just not worth trying to convince someone they are wrong, but very polite of you to try. lol

It is not nice when you start to doubt yourself. Sometimes knowalls think they know it all when quite clearly they do not.

that is an irresponsible act of Mr. I Know Everything, because he might cause the tourists to be lost in the place.

I have a problem with self-effacing myself at times. Self-esteem issues I suppose. But, yes I do doubt myself at times like what you have described. Rethinking helps.

That's why when you're going to a certain place, you don't just ask one person, but a lot of people who you think had been there. some were just fooling around or they thought they knew the place. we had that experience once and the driver who was with us never stop asking people until he gets the right answer. i wonder what happened to them?

@boiboing some people will just brag or spill out some info but you never know if their telling the truth. after learning this, it became a frightful experience so it's better to ask more than one person.

They will have been fine. But I guess they won't have listened to Mr Know It All the rest of their trip

I remember once overhearing a tourist telling another one how to get from leister square to Piccadilly via the tube .

When I'm 100% sure about something, none of the outside opinion matters. But when I know only half, such half-baked opinions do confuse me. Doesn't mean I would follow their opinion blindly though.
