At home beer brewing

I'be recently been trying to brew my own beer. I've made two brews. The first I think I used too much sugar because when the process was complete there was more foam than beer. The second time my beer came out almost exactly the way I wanted it too except for the color. It's very foggy and unclear. Can anyone tell me what may have happened or provide any pointers?
