Getting Too Old for Sitting on the Grass

Tomorrow we are going to Perth to stay with friends and will be away four nights. Opportunities for MyLotting might be limited. Tomorrow evening we are going to a concert featuring The Waifs who were originally from Albany on Western Australia's south coast. The two girls are now based in the USA but I don't know where the third member, a guy, is based. I know they are all some distance from each other. We booked tickets for a group of eight and have just read the small print about the site. We'll be sitting on the grass but no chairs, beanbags, etc are allowed. Oh dear, I wonder how we'll get up off the grass when it's all over? A small picnic blanket is okay. We can't take Eskies (cooler bags), definitely can't take alcohol although we can buy it there, can only take unopened water or cool drink (soda) but we can fill empty water bottles for free. Respectfully priced food and drink will be available whatever that means. Next time we'll read the fine print first. Makes our house concerts seem like a doddle.

I agree that sitting on the glass is not ideal, but I hope you can make the best of it and enjoy it.

We've paid our money now so we'll have a great time whether we like it or not.

@JudyEv I heard someone say something like that to their child once at the ski hill. "We are on vacation and we are having fun. Stop whining!"

@paigea Sometimes you gotta let those kids know when they are having fun

Oh dear, I can certainly understand your concerns about getting up off the grass! I still don't mind doing it, but it is getting more & more difficult to get up again gracefully. Enjoy the concert and your time away!

@JudyEv my husband would never get up again from ground or floor level, he'd need a crane to help him!

I don't even care about the 'graceful' bit - just want to be sure I can get up. We can lean against each other and look sideways for a while then swap sides but Vince doesn't think he can turn his head far enough to look sideways. Should be a fun night!!!

@valmnz I think we might be relying on the two younger ones.

I can imagine it can be quite uncomfortable for some people sitting on the grass. I enjoy sitting on the grass, but perhaps not for too long, unless I can lie down. Hope you'll find yourself a better solution to get rid of the discomfort and enjoy the concert!

@JudyEv Good that you managed the discomfort, and hope the standing up was not too tiring for you all. Yes, I think we really need to read properly before we purchase such tickets. I wonder if everyone else knew about this before they bought the tickets.

@kaka135 Many took along picnic chairs as they were all lined up along the fence to be picked up after the concert finished.

We stood up for half the concert so we managed but we might think twice about going to the same venue again.

I don't think someone is too old to sit on the grass I mean age is just a number, Have fun with your trip my friend! @JudyEv

As you get older it gets quite uncomfortable sitting with your legs straight out in front - and I'm too stiff to cross my legs. Age might be a number but it brings with it tired backs and aching legs. If I thought I would be comfortable I'd be quite happy to sit on the grass. But the rest of it will be fun.

Oh poor Judy, sitting on the grass is not comfortable. What about an inflatable pillow?

It's really the need to have a backrest that is the most important thing. Perhaps Vince and I will have to lean back to back and look sideways. :)

I wouldn't do very well having to sit on the ground and forget trying to get up...lol. I hope it all goes well for you and that you and your group enjoy the concert.

@JudyEv I'm glad you enjoyed the concert. I probably would have had to stand for most of it also. I wonder why they wouldn't let you bring chairs to sit in?

@simone10 They can probably get more people in without chairs and some take big chairs and obstruct the view of others.

That's easy . To get up be on your hands and knees first to be able to get up from the grass .

lol I have found that there is really no way to be dignified while trying to get from a sitting position on the grass to a standing position. Good luck and enjoy.

We ended up standing up while the main act was on. Everyone else did so if you wanted to see anything you had to stand.

OH lordy. Its OK getting down and sitting on the grass its the undignified way of trying to stand up on your pins again. Well Let the most able get up first to help those who can't. Have a great time although I suspect it is nearly over by now!

I also overlook to read the fine print assuming it will be just the normal requirements, but it always pays to take the trouble! Occasionally, I have to sit on the floor but I am not used to it for years so I have to keep shifting and getting up needs some effort later! Hope you are having a good time otherwise - siva

This is exactly how it is like for me. I am getting old and stiff whereas once I was much more agile. But we still enjoyed the concert.

I can not get off the ground with grace since I had a knee replacement. No kneecap on that knee so only knee can touch the ground. I can get up but it's not pretty or graceful. I know you will have fun. Ask for help to get up.

Gee, they won't even allow those beach chairs that are basically on the ground. I know I am not very dignified when I have to get up after sitting on the ground for a while. (even getting up from the sled today was not a pretty sight)

Some had padded cushions with a sort of backrest. We might invest in those one day but I doubt we'll go to this venue too often.
