Where do you know most of your friends from?

I'm heading off to hear some music tonight by the Chris Cain band down in Freemont. The fella I'm going with is a softball buddy. He's a softball buddy, but we've been to many parties together, talked about family and other serious matters, and taken in music together. He's even come to see one of my bands play. It occurs to me that I know most of my friends through things we've done together. Many are softball buddies or ex-softball buddies. Several others are music buddies. Some survived tough college classes with me. A handful were simply neighbors. Where have most of your friendships come from?

In the real world, I have two friends - one from early 1990s (we were together studying computers) and another my wife - I met her when I was interviewing for a position and we became colleagues (in 2004-5). Most of my acquaintances of today are from work or even those whom I studied with at school (these used to be friends during school, but today, it is just that I happen to know them). On the online world, 99% of my friends come from MyLot. The only 1% are from a few other forums that I used to visit/manage when MyLot was not paying.

My closest friend is from my childhood. Even though we are far apart we stay connect by phone, text, facebook, and see each other once a year. My closest friends in Florida were former neighbors and present neighbors. I also have friends from both of my children's schools and therapies. I also cherish the friends I made on here @DaddyEvil, and @fishtiger58.

@fishtiger58 I've been bowling with one of my kid client lately! I'm starting to get fired up about it again. I bowled a 165 yesterday, which is really good for me.

I have few friends from work. Most of friends that we get together are people I know through my husband. He's the friendly sort and becomes friends to many that I wouldn't even guess sometimes, like the stall owners at the hawker-style food court he frequents...

My husband and I, have common friends. We knew most of them during the time we lived in France. Many are from the computer world, programmers, software developers. We are still friends with all those who have common interests.

@TheHorse Absolutely, if there are not common interests, the friendship fades over the years.

It may be the common interest thing that keeps things going. Interestingly, though, I have a friend from high school who is also in Education, but we only really communicate once every other year or so.

Uhm... I really don't have any ... uhm ... how to say this.... There aren't any people I go hang out with left to me now, pony, no close friends... I have many online friends! You already know a lot of them. I have Gloria, the friend from WebAnswers, I have Jabo from Bubbs, I have Nameless from WA and Bubbs I have some here, like my King, fishtiger and sishy, Yuki, much2say, vanny and PA, JJ and... hmmm ... I feel like I am forgetting someone important to me, but can't come up with a name.. Let me think about it, okay? Uhm... I would include you in my list, too, pony. I won't pretend to leave mommaj out anymore, either. I am positive I have not mentioned many others I love in this list, but there are so many from here on myLot and from WA and Bubbs, too. Can you count on friends you only know online? In some ways you can... Although, I think I could count on some of my online friends if I really needed them, I think some of them would bust a gut trying to do whatever I needed online and in the real world. Yeah, I know, this is really lame, isn't it? LOL. I know where all the people I used to call friends are... I'd rather not say any more, okay? Things happen... Life happens, mostly.

@TheHorse Please do not borrow butter from @DaddyEvil. He confessed to not going grocery shopping on a regular basis and I would hate to see a sick horse. @DaddyEvil we have established I'm at least 10 yrs. younger than you, errrr, uhmmm, what I meant is at 103 I have seen a lot and know exactly what you mean. The worst was a childhood friend that would be at our house literally every day growing up and even went on camping trips with us. He left behind a wife and two young boys. He was only in his 30s. So things definitely happen.

@TheHorse Well, yes, a lot of my time at work and even before I started working there, was and still is spent online.... Uhm... I am also reaching an age where some of the childhood friends I had aren't accessible to me anymore. I am pretty sure you understand what I mean.... You've probably had that happen with at least one friend before, too, pony.

Well, a lot of your life (including your work) revolves around the computer world. So it makes sense that a lot of your social connections would be from that world. Would we be borrowing butter from each other if we lived next door? I think so. I met several Epinions members at a "Meet 'n Greet" in San Francisco, and I enjoyed the ones in person that I enjoyed on-line.

I met my best friend in Italy. We met during a vacation in Italy and stayed in touch when we returned to Denmark. Most of my other friends are old classmates, old neighbours and online friends who became offline friends when we met. My husband and I moved 6 months ago and we have met some of our new neighbours, but we don't know many people from this area.

I have so many friends I met when I was 9 years old and my family moved to another town. I went to 4th grade with them and we are still friends for almost 55 years. Some of them were Girl Scouts with me. Luckily I have not lost many to illness, etc. We all went to school together and after graduation we went our separate ways but still keep in touch and see each other at weddings or class reunions. Another group of friends I met when I started working many years ago and I also keep in touch with some of them. I was a hairdresser on cruise ships when I was 20 and still keep in touch with one of my room mates and she is the godmother for my daughter and my daughter has her middle name. After I went back to work when the kids started school I have lots of friends from there and finally the last 20 years of my life I worked in retail and have lots of friends from there as I became a manager and was transferred to so many different stores to help train people and design the garden departments. I have a lot of friends from there too. I guess you notice I have a pattern, I like to keep the friends I make and everyone of them has the same outgoing personality as I do and want to have fun. We may not see each other all the time but we can pick up the conversation that we left off of the last time we met.
