Dreams can make you tired, did you know?

Ever woke up more tired than before you went to sleep? Ever had a dream where you were being chased and woke up as tired as if you had really been running? Ever wondered why? Turns out this is totally a thing. Accoriding to the article I am going to place at the bottom of this, dreaming has a purpose. We process things during sleep, so things worrying us are still worrying us, the point is to get the brain to process it and defuse it a bit. The dreaming part of sleep is a misnomer, as it really is not that restful. We have more adrenaline and other stress hormones during REM sleep, aka when we dream. What does this mean? If you have vivid dream after vivid dream, you may be over-dreaming, and wake up exhausted. This article also ties this over dreaming to depression, that some depressed people dream more, get less good sleep which leads to a downward spiral of more depression, go figure. http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/depression-faq/depression-and-dreaming/

I dream in vivid color and I wish I could remember more of the dreams.

@AbbyGreenhill from what I know is that the dreams which will have some meaning to us we will remember totally. I have a handful of such dreams that I have written in my diaries and one or two I can still remember today quite well.

@RasmaSandra I remember while in the process of waking up , but after I'm awake they are gone with the wind.

Dont get me wrong, but somehow, that doesnt work out right for me. The URL you shared mentions - Depressed people dream more because they have more emotional arousal to ‘dream out.’ And in my case, when I have been depressed, I barely get any sleep. But yes, there have been many times when I have woken up scared, and even tired with a lot of perspiration. On many of them (the tiring ones), I was either running or even falling from somewhere that I have never been able to figure out.

@Jessicalynnt I wished someone helped me with this kind of a response on the earlier mylot as there was an argument once wherein the commentor did not accept this - that is just a study, and studys can be made to get the results they want based on who they decide to study, so it may apply to some but not all.. Yes, depression worsens in case the body doesnt get sufficient rest and probably this is the reason most of the people who claim to heal depression, prescribe some dulling medications - with a belief that making the brain lazy may get the patient some sleep.

oh that is just a study, and studys can be made to get the results they want based on who they decide to study, so it may apply to some but not all. I wasn't sure on the depressed parts, although if you are getting less restful sleep for any reason, I can imagine the tired making the depressy worse, lack of sleep isnt good for a person.

I have heard it said that dreaming occurs during deep sleep, which makes no sense to me. I know that as a person with fibromyalgia who can't get into the deep restorative sleep stage, that dreaming occurs during the lighter sleep stage. Think of the times when you are drifting off to sleep and you dream you are falling off a cliff which awakens you. I dream all the time. Sometimes I remember, sometimes I don't. Sometimes they come back to me half way through the day. As a person with fibromyalgia who can't get into the deep sleep stage, I wake up feeling tired all the time. It's the nature of the illness. It never occurred to me that dreaming might be related to it in any way. I think it is actually reversed in that if you don't get into deep sleep you dream more, rather than you don't get into deep sleep because you dream. Did that make any sense?

I think perhaps we need the sleep cycle to actually get some good rest, even if parts of that sleep are not restful.

Some of my dreams make me tired. They are so colorful and vivid that they make my brain and body tired.

Very interesting! The best dream I ever had gave me an idea for a bulletin board I was told to do in a hallway in a school. I was so worried about it, because I couldn't think of what to do. An idea came to me in a dream, which I made it a dream to remember!

My dreams confuse me, but I have many fewer where I am being chased and my feet won't move. Although, it's better that they don't move, since I don't want to go running in my sleep.

interesting that we can exhaust ourselves sleeping - shame I can't dream I jogged five miles and actually lose weight from the dream

Having too much on your mind could result in fatigue. Some dreams create more issues than others. It's best that we obtain the best rest possible. We can accomplish that by not overthinking.

I actually get rested the longer I dream. If I go to sleep and then wake up after having no dreams I'm exhausted. But if I'm exhausted, only have an hour to sleep, and have 8 hours of dreams (what feels like 8 hours), then I wake up completely refreshed. I had a ton this morning as well and woke up well rested. The dreams this morning were all inspired by a show I've been watching lately. And of course content I've been writing. There were a lot of them with different themes. I have to say I really enjoyed when the ships were stranded, and the crew threw these balls towards other ships, and they expanded out with a parachute and beacon to alert the other ships of danger.

I've had a lot of vivid dreams lately and I really don't know why. I've been dreaming about my mother and my X, both gone from this world. It's not like I had a good relationship with either that I'm missing them either. They've been strange dreams.

@BethieAnnie Interesting idea. My dreams lately are centered on a book I'm reading. I've never had that happen before. I've had dreams about books I'm writing, but not ones I'm reading. At the moment I'm reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I have been dreaming more lately, too. I think the reason that I am so tired in the morning is because I dream too much.

May be the study is right. Sometimes, I also feel that my mind is tired, when I get up. May be dreams make an affect on my brain.

My dreams can be very vivid as well.. like detailed as if I were awake.. and other dreams can even be in a language I don't know but what I'm saying in the dream with others I know the meaning of what is being said. Then there are just dreams without any meaning at all and dreams of something going to happen and it does.. Like this past weekend I had a dream family came to visit.. that same day family came to visit.. my girls get a kick out of that! It was a nice surprise.. but was it really a surprise if I had that dream?
