Ancestry DNA Kit

I was thinking about sending for an Ancestry DNA kit to help me figure out exactly where my mother's people came from. I know Europe but I have done research that shows Jewish history. This makes sense to me because of how many times they changed their last name. I think they did that to survive in a time when it was dangerous to be a Jew. It would make me very proud! Has anyone else tried the DNA kit? What methods did you use to do research?

We'll probably do it at some point. There's a rather large portion of our family tree missing, as we have no idea who my grandmother's biological parents were. It would be interesting to have that profile for our kids and our own personal curiosity if nothing else.

All children are not legitimate and you never know what you can find. I have a family tree up to the middle of the 18th C for my less known branch which was from Poland, and a lot older for the best known part (at least the 12th C with a hole or two in the tree), but I would be interested to see what would show a DNA test. Pure curiosity.

@topffer Oh, interesting! I think the predominant heritage on my dad's side is Polish, although the family's surname is German from what I understand.

@yukimori Then it is another common point between us : the name was converted/translated to French from German when this ancestry became French. It means something different in Polish. But he was born in Poland, according to his declarations. I never searched in Poland, so I am stuck at his birth, in the middle of the 18th C.

How much does a DNA kit cost? I've heard that a person can track their "roots" back a long way and that would be interesting to me. My son has already traced my husband's family back to Scotland in the 1600s and me back to France in the 1500s, through ancestry.com

I'd like to try it some time. I want to see if I really have all the bloodlines I think I do. Because the one possibility really fits me well.

I've done some research into my family tree. I don't know about the DNA thing, though. I'm not sure it would be that interesting or would tell me anything I don't already know.

I think ElizabethWallace did that. I suppose it would be interesting; not something I would spend money on though.

Haven't tried it yet but certainly will especially as it has gone under £100 now for a full test.
