I would make begging a crime in India

Truly it does not make sense. Children are kidnapped for this profession. Children from good households. Children who are good looking (yeah...when the person who gives alms looks at them there should be something appealing about the face) are at risk. If we banned begging I am sure all this will disappear. Agreed that those who are in homes will be exploited in sex trades. But that is happening anyway. I also think that once begging is banned in the country altogether, children would not leave their homes and get exploited by others. Do you think it would help?

I am afraid banning this wouldn't solve anything.........There are other issues too that needs to be dealt with......They are all interconnected or woven into each so much that solving any one of these issues leads to entangling the whole thing more tightly......You can't tell where to start and where to end.......

@vandana7 @Daljinder I agree that banning begging will not solve anything. It may reduce their earnings, yes, but they will just find another way to exploit children. Finding the roots will put a stop to this crimes.

I do not know if this can help. Would the police come if you see a beggar and you call them? Begging is banned in our country, this does not mean that you cannot find beggars in some places, but we inform the police they immediately come to check on them.

I'm not crazy about the idea of people begging on the streets but there should be a way to help those in need.

Of course. Those who need help would be given help provided they queue up and collect at one place assigned by the government from government coffers. Not average citizen. No unaccounted income there.

@vandana7 God wants us to help our neighbors and if begging is banned and replaced by a better way then why not?

@1hopefulman ..Able bodied people would have to start contributing to the nation for sure in whatever way they can. And children would be sent either to a home or their home.

@vandana7 I don´t know if this is true, but I have heard that some people break their infant´s bones so that the will earn more money later begging. I am sure that those crimes can be discorved up to a certain point. That is more than child abuse; that is torture.

@marguicha ..Yes they do, and also to ensure that the youngsters don't escape ...and also to ensure that those kids are not easily recognized.

I don't know what would help in your country. Begging doesn't exist in the US at least not on the level you're talking about.

I don't think banning begging will help. At least here where I live people who beg do it as a last resort and or alternative to not having to steal. You beg because at least with begging it is being given to you. If people feel force and have less options they feel pushed towards more extreme measures.Even in the riches of places human trafficking is a problem its a profitable crime.

You bring a nice point to the table about human trafficking being profitable crime. But in India the network is so large that if a major source was pulled away, the system would collapse.

We also have the same kind of crime against children here. When people realized that kids were being exploited and used like that, they stopped giving alms to this kids and we, most of the time, just give the children food.

No. I tend to disagree. I realize that my thoughts are always confusing but still, I would not try banning this thing especially here in India. But yes, I would ban those Racquets/Syndicates that kidnap children for this profession - and maybe equate these people with terrorists and national criminals. Reason I do not want this begging thing to be banned is because of the simple fact that despite s many decades of Independence, we have failed to provide millions of people with means to earn, means to get a life. There are definitely some beggars who do beg because of our inadequacy and failure to provide them with the basic amenities in life. I still remember that beggar who would sit in front of our house all day and night. He will never ask for money, but only something to eat - and that too only sufficient for himself. The days my late granny will give him more food, he will not go to the next door to ask. He was offered work, he joined for a few days, but then, he had some health issues (leprosy, if I remember it correctly) and others will not work with him.

Does that really happen - children being kidnapped in order to be used for begging? How awful.

Begging is a complex social economical problem. I'm not sure if banning begging would stop child abuse. Children would probably still be kidnapped but sold for other purposes. To address the root of the problem seems to be solving child-related crimes.

Since begging is something that's taken place since the beginning of time, I'd think it would just be a black market scam of some type. I'm not sure that it would help at all, unless the police would fine the people begging, but if they don't really have any money then they wouldn't be able to pay any fines. Many destitute people in America will commit crimes just so they will be jailed and then get three meals a day free while there.
