Home Made or Scratch

I have learned something. I always thought home made meant, from scratch, but I have come to realize that home made these days simply means, it was made at home. This has confused me for a while now. I was chatting with another mom that said she made a home made pasta dish last night. I was interested, and asked what she made and how she did it. She explained how she bought a bag of noodles and a jar of pasta. um, cool. But ,not really what I call home made. So, I guess what I really mean is scratch right? Well, when I look up a recipe I get really frustrated, I type in chocolate cake and wind up with "open a cake mix" box. No, I want to make it from scratch. Do we even cook from scratch anymore? I have no problem with people opening boxes, just not what I was thinking of as home made or scratch. My daughters were suppose to make home made cookies one night in Girls in Action and the leader brought in a tube of cookie dough. My girls had never made cookies like that before and were very confused. The leader asked me afterward "Your girls have never made cookies before?" Yes they have, but not from a tube. The picture is a cake my 13 year old son made, not from a box & decorated by him.

lol which is why I don't buy baked goods from a bake sale unless I know the baker!! Yes I do scratch cooking and baking. However my grandsons love my daughter's secret recipe spaghetti sauce (Ragu) lol I have taught the older ones how to make scratch baked mac and cheese and they love it.

When I was growing up, the best part of the scratch mac and cheese - there was no other kind - was the spoon with all the gooey cheese on it.

Yes, they took a lot less time, that was for sure. It was so funny listening to the girls talk about it afterward, "She took out a tube mom!" they were just horrified.

Making home made from scratch is what I always thought it meant not out of a can or jar.

@mom210 That is a good idea as it does not seem to mean the same thing to everyone.

Hmmm... Well, I would try a piece of his cake, Kim! LOL! If I could pry it out of your hands, that is! I've been running into that same kind of thinking for the last few years! I have no idea where people got the idea that opening a mix and using it is homemade! It isn't what my mom called homemade and it certainly isn't what I mean when I say homemade, either!

@paigea Yeah, but that is understandable, especially with small children added into the mix! Life happens to all of us!

Oh and it was a very good cake too, my son made it and did the decorations. I think boys & girls need to know how to cook. When I started teaching him, he really enjoyed the dessert part. It has kind of become his job to make the birthday cakes in the family. I am glad you are running into the same thing, and I am not the only one.

@mom210 my brother was the cake decorator in our home too. He seems to have abandoned that as a busy business owner with small kids. They buy beautiful cakes from someone who has a home based business.

It's very hard to find recipes from scratch today. You need to go to the thrift stores and look for the older cookbooks. It's sad really. My mother made everything from scratch. Home made was definitely home made. That's a very nice looking cake your son made.

I love old cookbooks, anytime I see them at yard sales I grab them. My mom has many really old ones from the depression.

I agree, from scratch, should mean that we may buy the ingredients and put it together ourselves. Let's say that I made a pie from scratch, it should mean that made the dough and cut the apples, etc.

Oh yes, he loves to cook, in fact I have to kick him out of the kitchen sometimes, because he kills my food budget, he will decide to make this, and now that, oh and how about this when I am done. Sometimes all I can see is $$$, go play son.

We make everything we can from scratch-not boxes, cans, etc...but we can't grow tea, have not conquered some herbs, etc. Happily there are some in the area who can grow most of what we can't.

@simone10 it does seem everybody is pressed for time and home made is very time consuming. But we are all so over weight these days and it is so much better for us. I don't know, do they still teach it in school?

I make some stuff from scratch, like cookies, but other times I use a box. Kind of depends on what I'm making and how much time I have. When I say homemade I mean anything from home, from a box or scratch. If I only want from scratch that's what I'll say.

Yeh, typically I would associate "home made" with "made from scratch" too, but came to view them as distinct when I actually started "making" things at home...um, I'm not very good at it;)

Sadly few people cook totally from scratch. I do a combination of both, homemade and from scratch. It depends on how much time I have.
