Just heard the news this morning, 31-Jan-2016, that Sir Terry Wogan has passed away at the age of 77. His wit and wisdom, from TV's Children in Need through Eurovision, to BBC Radio 2 morning and Sunday radio, will be sadly missed. More on the BBC web site:
Veteran BBC broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan has died aged 77, after a "short but brave battle with cancer", his family says.

I'm sorry to hear this but did not know him- seems though that many celebrities are dying of cancer- it's getting a little scary!

Somewhere there's a bullet with your name on it... it's impossible to tell which angle it's going to come at you from, thankfully.

@pgntwo A thoughtful way to put it. I hope mine isn't in the chamber yet--ha!

I never used to enjoy his jocularity and brand of humour much at first but, over the years his evident genuineness, generosity and real care for the charitable causes he supported won me over. I had no idea that he was only two years older than I and my sympathies and condolences go to Helen and his family.

I used to enjoy the Janet and John stories he, alongside traffic-announcer John "Boggy" Marsh, or sometimes Alan "the voice of the balls" Dedicoat, read out now and then when he hosted the Radio 2 morning show. He made it sound so unrehearsed...

Thank you. He was a person who made you think he was talking to you, not just to a microphone. Here is one of the regular items he slotted into his morning radio show now and then:

just heard now. To be honest I lost respect for him some time ago when I found out he was the only celebrity that got paid for children in need...all the rest participated for free.

I don't know the details of his contract with Children in Need or who suggested that he should be paid. Many directors and promoters of charities are paid, of course, and most do earn their salary by bringing in far more for the charity than they are paid. I suspect that Wogan would have donated a substantial amount of his fees for Children in Need back to the charity. He was that sort of man he was, I think.

@Mike197602 I agree that that sounds very unfair and unconscionable (regardless of the fact that the tax man would have taken a large part of it, which, in itself, is totally wrong, in my view).

@owlwings what I said was factually correct but as I've been trying to change my ways and be a nicer person I do realise there is a time and place to say certain things and my comments fail on both counts. Listening to the tennis on 5 live and hearing the obituary comments I'm slightly not pleased with myself so don't be surprised if my comments disappear Edit: I'll leave them up and take the stick I expect to get from people Maybe eventually I'll learn my lesson
