How much crime is in your community?

Crime is a real interest of mine. I'd be interested in knowing about the levels and types of crime in your city. Do you live in a rural, urban or suburban area? What is the crime like? Does it affect your daily life? Is there a certain measure of fear that you feel at night, walking alone? Or in some other potentially dangerous situation?
Crime seems to vary so much depending on location. A lot of my friends in the suburbs tell me about how they keep their houses and cars unlocked, and I balk at this. I live in an urban area in Minnesota and we have a fair share of crime. The crime seems to depend on which block you are on. I am currently in a better area of the city; there is very little crime that actually affects me. About a year ago, my car did get broken into and my wallet was stolen. Big deal - that's not a crazy major crime. However, in other parts of the city I live in, perhaps only less than a mile away - major crimes seem to occur - shootings, robberies, domestic abuse situations...All kinds of crime. Yet, my neighborhood seems mostly isolated from this, which is great.
What about you? How safe is your neighborhood?

In my city it is the same - it depend on which block you are on. In the Downtown is a lot of crime - in the fringes of the city not really much.
