Happy first day of February.
This is the shortest month of the year, but it's full of celebrations.
February 2nd (tomorrow) is the Groundhog Day (Candlemas)
February 8th, the Chinese New Year starts (the year of the Monkey).
February 9th it's Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday).
February 12th Lincoln Birthday
February 14th Valentine's Day
And, for me only, February 24th is my birthday.
Which one of those holidays do you celebrate?

I will not be a Ground Hog tomorrow because I will be airborne.
I am struggling now to remember what the original creature was that changed into Groundhog day. It was originally a German event that was introduced into America by immigrants and the species had to be changed to a groundhog because the original one did not exist there, although I cannot recall what it was.

I know that the groundhog and the marmot are the same animal. We do not celebrate the marmot day in Europe, but in the United States thy have a very complex and official celebration, disturbing the sleep of a poor marmot still asleep because February is still winter.

@blitzfrick Exactly, this day is celebrated for the presentation of Jesus, the purification of Mary and the Meeting of the Lord by Orthodox Church.

@LadyDuck also celebrated by Christians as the day of ritual purification of Mary....

Happy New Month! The kids have learned about Groundhog Day in school, but we have no groundhogs here and hardly a real winter anyway . We are not Chinese, but as the kids get to make a day out of it at school, we do a pseudo celebration at home. No mardi gras unless there is an event we can go to. Lincoln's birthday the kids get off - not sure if Hubby will get the day off. And Valentine's Day we all celebrate - the kids pass out Valentine cards and get a party . . . and at night we have a special dinner and exchange small Valentine gifts. We also have quite a few family birthdays and anniversaries too - busy month for us!

Now that I'm retired none of those days have a meaning for me.

My precious nephew has his birthday on Feb. 2. Our blessing of a grandson will turn 6 on Feb. 14. My husband, who spoils me daily, insists on celebrating Valentine's Day every year since the day we met. He made reservations at one of the most difficult restaurants to get into on his birthday in December. This year is Leap Year, so we get an extra day in Florida. Today celebrates my hubby's eldest brother's birthday. It marks the ocassion of an oldest living relative on his side of the family.

@fishtiger58 It was not a user from New Orleans, she said there are Carnival parades for the kids in many US cities. I think to remember she is from Missouri.

Feb. is special month indeed. Second half of beginning of spring here. Except for 'Valentine's Day', no other festival is celebrated here (as you have stated in your list). February is special for me because my wedding anniversary falls on 4th.
I hope I could remember 24th so as not to forget to wish you on your birthday.

@LadyDuck I would celebrate with my grandkids if we lived in the same city. Sometimes my brother will bring home a box of chocolates or a stuffed animal but he knows right now I am on a diet and I asked him not to get me anything.

@nottoooldtowrite In France there was a large Chinese community, so they celebrated the Chinese New Year, not here in Switzerland.
