I Just Want to Shop

Sadly, I always get the urge to buy new things when I am not keeping myself busy earning the money to buy new things. And I can always think of things I really need. I mean that, I don't just want them, I truly need them. At least, most people think these things are essential to everyday life. But then, I have to admit that I don't have these things, and yet, I am still alive. So, maybe I don't need them. When I actually need something, I find it hard to buy it. There's no joy in buying practical things. Today I want a shower curtain that is a painting of a street in France and some brightly colored bath rugs. I don't need them. But it would be nice to have a bathroom that was trés jolie. Do you shop when you need things or when you want them? Do you feel the same joy when you finally get things you need, or when you get things you want?

I have a cart filled at Amazon where I place all the things I want and then wait a day or two to see if I still need them.

I often have to wait longer than that. I just deleted a few things that have been in my "save for later" for almost a year..

Oh, I know how that feels. It is sure to be a situation after Christmas, before we get our finances back together. Occasionally I explode and just go shop.

Maybe Christmas leaves us with a better idea of what we still don't have?

I sure know how that goes. There are plenty of wants - PLENTY - and there are things that I need but it doesn't go in the "absolutely" need category. So I do a lot of window shopping to take care of that fix - sort of. As for the joy of getting practical stuff, well, it's more like the joy that I got a task done.

Absolute needs are usually the things we get bills for. But there are so many nice things. Window shopping can help, because you see so many things that you can spend hours trying to decide the shape, the size, the color, etc.

@Rollo1 It's fun isn't it? (Window shopping I mean, not about paying the bills )

I find it hard to spend money on things I need when I have the money. I try to talk myself out of the need, even though I know I need it. So I can relate. As for making it feel good when I finally do spend the money on what I need - yes. I also feel good when I talk myself into getting that one item I know I want and don't need, yet I know that if I don't get it, I will regret it.

It's never fun to let go of money and not get a present in exchange. Who needs the needed stuff? Well I guess I do need some things, but I try very hard not to buy them because they don't inspire joy.

I do that too, I cannot tell you how many items I have set aside at the checkout at the last minute.

@Rollo1 No they don't. I think that's why grocery shopping is a chore instead of something fun to do with your money. I like spending money. I just don't like it leaving my hand.

I don't like shopping for anything much - except maybe hardware stuff for some project or other.

Interestingly, hardware of a sort is on my list. I want some track shelving.

@Rollo1 If we go into our big hardware store we always find something we can't possibly do without.

Aside from grocery shopping, I do enjoy shopping for just about anything. I love browsing the shops either online or brick and mortar. Because I don't just purchase an item before checking several places so I get the best price! When I find something for less, it is a thrill for me.

@Rollo1 Grocery shopping online would be something I would love for my clients to do. If they could have the entire order ready for me to pick up rather than hunting down an item that I've never purchased before that would save me a lot of time!

I do my grocery shopping online, too. In some ways, it's a bit thrilling, though I don't think i get many bargains. But since it takes time to figure out the exact right order, I don't do much impulse buying of tasty treats.

lol I do need lots of things here in Florida. It is funny how it may take a couple weeks to realize that some things you take for granted are missing. My husband just informed me this morning that we need bamboo tongs to remove toast from our toaster. We have some in Connecticut and yes it is better than sticking a knife in!! Do I get joy from that no, I got joy from buying the decor at Hobby Lobby for my kitchen!!

I never thought of that - using a wood implement for those pesky pieces of bread that get caught in the toaster. Brilliant!

@Rollo1 It works really great and I found out that Publix doesn't have it today, bummer. I guess I need a kitchen store.

I shop when I need things as I rarely buy things just if I want something unless I have saved up enough for it.

I am finished with shopping. I never really liked it at all. I don't mind buying though. So I do most of everything online. It cuts down on the shopping and lets me buy with less pain. I don't buy much anymore, since I prefer to have open space rather than stuff.

@Rollo1 Okay. But for me, shopping is a chore. It involves driving around, looking at what is offered, until finally, if I am lucky, finding what I want and buy it. With online "shopping", the driving and most of the looking can be avoided.

I think there's good reason to treat yourself occasionally. It isn't good for us to always feel deprived of those things we want.

Usually I want to buy new decor things when I grow to hate my surroundings enough. If I keep busy, I don't even notice them,.

I hate shopping and only do it when I need something. That bathroom set sounds lovely and if I was bored with the set I bought 10 yeas ago when we bought the house, I might think about that...

I keep vacillating on the color that the rugs should be. There are many colors in the shower curtain, but nothing goes well with a harvest gold bathtub from the mid-20th century.
