People Who Don’t Like Music

I am really angry when I hear people say they never bother with ‘any’ music, books, films or TV shows. I can understand people with hearing or sight-disabilities, or people who dislike particular kinds of music, or genres of literature, or simply don’t own a TV. But to sweepingly say ‘I don’t like any kind of’ art, music, literature, etc., is such a sweeping generalization as to be just appalling. To me, to be tired of art is to be tired of life. You can count my mother in your list of people who don't like music. She never did and still doesn't. Yes, I think it's weird that with all the kinds of music in this world that something would have appealed to her. Me, on the other hand, like a wide variety of music and like to play it loud

@WorDazza my mum used to love Elvis - now she listens to hardly any music - she has standard compilations of party hits for her parties

My mum was the same. Apart from Johnnie Ray! She liked him. She's 81 now and I can honestly say I can't remember the last time she listened to a record (and yes it will have been so long ago it would have been an actual vinyl record, possibly even a 78 rpm).

I don't get those kind of people either. Still, I wouldn't want anyone who isn't a reader reading my books. I want someone who appreciates the written word and the work that goes into writing a novel.

I don't know that I've ever hear anyone say that. I know a lot of younger people don't have a "favorite author" because they don't read much.

Well I have never come across anyone who as said they didn't like music at all if I did then I would think that they are strange. As for books I don't particularly love reading (hence the reason for my messed up grammar) but I do occasionally find a book that captivates me. I do think I need to get more into books though and learn a few things so I may be a better writer.

I would have doubted that anyone could dislike music irrespective of genre.

I can't understand those either. How some people can live without listening to their favorite music, reading books or enjoying certain types of movies, TV show or sports broadcasts is a mystery for me. There must be something they enjoy. Music, art, literature are the food of our souls, without them life seems empty and meanigless to me.

I do not like every kind of music, but I love music, several different genres of music. I like classic, blues, jazz, rock and even opera.

To quote the O'jays "I love music!". My favorite is 80's and 90's R&B. That said, I have never met anyone who didn't like some sort of music, movies, art or books. Everybody just seems to have different taste and preferences. My niece recently said, " I hate books and love magazines." I had to laugh - who hates books, I asked her?

@arthurchappell I guess going to see the Louisiana Orchestra in New Orleans did inspire me to like classic music from artists like Vince DiCola and Bill Conti of Rocky Balboa fame.

I won't go so far as to say that I'm angry at those people. Maybe disappointed is the more accurate term in my case. I don't understand how some people can not like any form of art at all. I think it's part of what makes us human. A machine can definitely answer all technical stuff about music, but it can never hear music like people do.

I like entertainment. and I don't have any problem with it. We need entertainment in our lives. Especially music. Music heals the soul for everybody. Whatever the genre is in music. I listen to music daily to keep me from staying depressed all of the time. I have different favorites of genres in music, and I listen to them all. I even play music. I play the guitar, and it also helps me stay focused with my depression. So, yes, I do believe that entertainment is a big part of our lives, and we need it to entertain ourselves.

True. Its improbable that someone has no emotion towards any kind of art, literature, or music. I believe we all have something we are fond of at least. These hobbies and interests are part of life, without it, its hard to live a fulfilled life. Kudos.!

I have never heard anyone say such things. Maybe some people feel that art and literature are above them, that they do not understand them and so cannot enjoy. But music? Very weird.

Is there any person who is not interested in any of these? That looks near impossible. Because even people not into books love TV. But personally I want everything - Books, Music, Art. I have friends who work professionally in all these fields and I'm proud of what they do.
