The underfunding of the Public Defenders Office is now a national problem across the country. Defendants are not adequately represented. With the chronic economic problems in the country, these offices are likely to be underfunded into the foreseeable future. Here are some suggestions to improve the situation. First, we should end the lawlessness that is plaguing our country. Citizens do not adequately respect the law, get into trouble, and then need a lawyer. Most of these cases can be avoided simply by making an effort t comply with the law. Second, citizens should only use the public defender as a last resort. Defendants should make every effort to hire a lawyer including asking for help to actually pay for the lawyer. Third, we should hire the special lawyers who are called to do this kind of work, and adequately train them to be successful.

I think quite often, not just in the US, you get the justice you pay for

Thanks for the comment. In the US people are supposed to be adequately represented, and this is a serious problem in this environment.

The day I shot my husband @Mike197602 after he beat me up for the millionth time, I was hauled to jail. I paid $7,000 for an attorney who wanted me to plead guilty to Criminal Negligent Homicide (original charge was murder), instead of Self-Defense. The female judge called me a murderer even though I had plenty of documentation and pictures of the physical abuse (past and present). I was sentenced to 5 years probation, $3,000 court costs, $3,000 probation fees. What a crock.

Your first one would absolutely solve a lot of the problems to begin with @PeterGagliardi . It use to be that offenders were between the ages of 30 and above; now it's 10-20-year olds. It's ridiculous. Nobody is bothering to teach their kids anything.

It is a major issue where I live in Luzerne County. The Public Defenders Office did not do much during one of the worst judicial scandals in U.S history.

In Chicago right now the police have gotten tired of supporting people that protest them and march against them, so they have backed off and they are now killing each other in high numbers. I think it's a great idea. If the people don't want their help, let them slaughter each other. When the numbers are next to nothing, send the police in to restore order and put away the criminals left.
