Magnesium helps you get your zzzz's

I don't know what I would do if I hadn't heard about Magnesium if you are a bad sleeper. I used to have it in capsule form but I now take it in a powdered drink that tastes fine, but maybe a bit like the old Alka Seltzer of Eno did for upset stomachs. I am the kind of sleeper that sleeps okay at first but wakes up an hour or two later and then can have trouble getting back to sleep. This is when I make my little powdered drink and have a few sips. It's good for pain too as I have a bad hip and it hurts sometimes at night when I'm sleeping too long in the same position. That's because magnesium helps with muscle pain and aches too as it is a natural muscle relaxer. A deficiencly in magnesium can contribute to irritable leg syndrome, eye twitching, migraines, irritability and countless other problems. Have trouble sleeping? Try some magnesium powder- a natural way to get your zzzz's.

I don't need that as I sleep well, but I didn't know that it was helpful for bad sleepers. I remember there used to be milk of magnesia for indigestion, but don't know if it's still around.

We used the same in Italy, but I think it's no more around.

@LadyDuck And I also have used good old fashioned warm milk- it actually does make you sleepy. There's something in the lactose.

@jabo yes it still is around and it is good for digestion and constipation. The magnesium I'm talking about is a cousin to Calcium which is also good for relaxing. Magnesium can come in many forms. :)

I suppose that this is individual, our doctor prescribed magnesium to my husband but he recommended to take it in the morning. Some days he forgot and had it in the evening and he was unable to sleep all the night long.

That's strange though Anna as it calms you, not the opposite. Maybe it was a different type.

I am happy for you that finally you have found a solution to your sleeping problem . Well , if that happens to me i would be problematic because the next day i have to report to work . My problem though is sometimes i have a problem of getting sleepy at my scheduled hour of sleep at night.

@SIMPLYD No not all- you don't crave it or anything and it is just a natural mineral like Calcium or Sodium.

@SIMPLYD (36019) You could still take Magnesium powder or capsules as they don't make you groggy and you'll be still able to go to work!

I basically do the same thing with a single ibuprofen. It works like a charm.

@BelleStarr I'm okay for a bit but then I may go through this sleep a bit, awake for awhile and and then sleep a bit more routine. That's when I take the powdered Magnesium.

Yes I do take Ibuprofen at night but also take it perhaps too many nights and it does work with the hip pain but I still need to get to sleep and am trying not to use it too much, as it thins the blood a bit. It shouldn't bother you though if you only take it occasionally.

Wow I didn't know that magnesium help with sleep. My daughter is always complaining that her hips hurt when she sleeps so maybe this will benefit her

Well, maybe she should ask for an X-ray too as she could have arthritis like me. Though she should try the magnesium as it does help you sleep and helps relax the muscles so there's less pain.

In my case I would resort to plants and one in particular is the snake plant that I've been using since last year. it has literally help me sleep better and doesn't make wake me after wards.

I really need to get back into taking magnesium as I sleep for an hour then wake up just like you do. Thanks for the reminder.

I have been using a coffee that has Valarian root. (Counting Sheep coffee) It is really working, But I need to find out more about the Valarian root. I will check out magnesium as I am a terrible sleeper.

They will probably work well together- as I have used Valerian Root in the past too. I'm another terrible sleeper.

I don't have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep but I do have several of the other issues you mentioned. I should probably look into getting some magnesium for myself.

Even people with occasional nervous ticks and eye twitching it can benefit. It's fairly inexpensive and you could probably just get it in capsule form. :)
