Have you received your 1095-B IRS Health Coverage Form?

I have just received my 1095-B IRS Health Coverage form in the mail. According to the Affordable Care Act or "Obama Care," all US tax filing individuals must have minimal essential health coverage or qualify for an exemption. If these conditions aren't meant, you will be liable for a penalty. I must ask my tax preparer about this matter because although I am covered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield, my Thai wife is covered by socialized medicine here in Thailand. Does anyone know what the penalty is?

@pauliek Here in most cases the patients have to pay every thing out of their pockets,Some may take private insurance. Then some employers cover health expenses to a limit. Now there are some demands that India govt should introduce something like Obamacare.

@silvermist Thanks for your comments. You probably are aware that Obamacare is unpopular among a lot of people in the States.

You still have to pay for health care in the USA even though you live in Thailand? I absolutely love Thailand. The people are so nice, gracious and polite ( The people I have come across anyway). I was there in November and had a great time.

I get my health care at international hospitals in Thailand and use my U.S. Blue Cross and Blue Shield medical insurance which I carried over into retirement. Are you visiting Thailand anytime this year?

@garymarsh6 I have been to Phuket only once before in 2005. There are other nice beaches in the vicinity like Krabi and Phi Phi. Chiang Mai in the north is another nice city to visit.

@pauliek I wish I were visiting again. I have been looking at Phuket again. We stayed there several years ago. It was a beautiful villa with your own private swimming pool. We went to Hua Hin for a few days but spent most of the time in Bangkok. I am not sure I want to stay in Bangkok again it is just far to crazy now. We stayed in the Bangkok Shangri-la which was superb.

I don't know what the penalty is. Between my wife and I we are well covered. I'm still appalled that government has taken control of this issue this way. To me, Justice Roberts will always be a coward for upholding Obamacare.

I also don't like the way the IRS is now involved in this matter. A lot of tax preparers are going to be making quite a bit of money

I have not gotten that form in the mail. I am getting worried. I am covered with some minimal insurance but what if I don't get the form? Will I have to pay the fine? My son got it today but he already filed. He is covered under the VA. Why is everything getting so complicated?

&akalinus , If you don't receive the form, I guess you will have to request it from the IRS or have your tax preparer do it for you. I really wish everything was not getting more complicated with the IRS now.

You are subject to Obamacare in Thailand? You kept citizenship? I don't think you can be penalized unless you are claiming your wife on your return and she is covered by a legit health service.

I am an American expat and am covered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield. My wife is not on my health plan because she gets her health care cheaper here in Thailand by being on a Thai government plan.
