Mardi Gras means 'Fat Tuesday' in French and is one of the names given to the Tuesday before the start of Lent (the 40 days fast before Easter). It is celebrated under that name in French speaking countries and in the parts of North America where French or the French dialect called Cajun is spoken. Since New Orleans is one of the areas where French patois is spoken, Mardi Gras is a big festival in that city.
In Latin America it is called 'Carnaval' (which means 'leaving or giving up meat'). In Sweden it is called 'Fettisdagen', which also means 'Fat Tuesday' - exactly the same as the French. In England it is called Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day (after the pancakes which are traditionally eaten on that day). In Sweden, the tradition is to eat a sweet pastry called 'Semla' or 'Fastlagsbulle' (depending on what part of Sweden you are from).
