When you need someone to do a man's job, send a woman

I wrote earlier in the week that my husband had taken our little black cat to the vet and been given some eye drops to administer twice a day. That was on Monday afternoon and when I got back last night, I learned that he hadn't given him any drops because he thought it would be impossible to do it with only one person. So this morning, spotting that Bagheera was curled up on the bed half-asleep, I asked my husband to get the eye drops. He was asking me whether I would hold the cat and he would do the drops or vice versa. Whilst he stood around flapping like a flag in a storm, I grabbed the drops, crept up behind the cat and squirted it straight into his eye. True he took off like he had a rocket up him, but the job was done and my poor husband looked a bit taken aback that I'd achieved the objective without any scratches, any howling or any need to hold the cat down. I'm not sure I'll get away with it quite so easily next time.

I would do the exact same thing if I were in your shoes. It's the simplest way. We tend to overthink too much. May your husband get hooked on using the same method when administering kitty's medication.

Your husband is really no match for a cat! If he cannot manage a cat, I wonder how he can manage to look after himself.

More ironic, he works in the prison service. So he has twice yearly training in 'control and restraint' of prisoners. This means he can flatten a fully grown man but he can't hold down a 3 kilo cat.

@boiboing haha, that is getting very funny! If a cat terrifies your husband so much that he does not attempt to control it, the prison service might as well hire cats to control the prisoners.

Administering eye drops for a cat would certainly not be a simple task, but it is certainly not a two person job either. By the way, I love the choice of name, Bagheera.

@boiboing Baloo is unlikely to suit his name as well as Bagheera does because he could actually play the role in the film.

His adopted big brother is Baloo. Sadly in real life they don't get on as well as in the book.

I've had cats so I can envision you squirting the drops and the cat taking off...have you seen him since?

I'm seriously disappointed in you! Attributing tasks to specific genders and encouraging friction between the sexes. I thought better of you!!!

@boiboing Yeah, that is a man's job. Electrics and water not a good mix in the hands of a woman!!

Congratulations, I wonder if it's more difficult to administer eye drops to a cat or to a husband.

I will stick a pill down Ruby's throat but I don't think I'd feel that safe doing anything to a cat.

I suspect the first time might well be the easiest. Or perhaps the problem will have cleared up after a week anyway, with or without treatment.

Don't you feel great when something like this actually works? I think you might have had a bit of luck on your side but well done anyway. I'm sure there's a few of us waiting to hear what happens next time. :)

I think that I did get lucky. But I also got lucky a few hours later with the second dose. Confidence goes a long way.

@boiboing Has the cat worked out that it is you doing the eye drops? He might be regarding you with suspicion soon.

I think its because a cat feels more at ease with a woman than a man.I have cat and he doesnt like my brother very much but he is calm when im around

You know it happened with me so many times that , I have asked my Partner to get something done , and to my utter disappointment it never happened , the reason , he felt that may be we could do it together. But then you realized , how can be so depended on you for all this minor things? Then I think may be I am at fault because I have never poked him to do things the way I wanted them , or else I have made myself " taken for granted " on certain things.

I had to give my puppy ear drops a while back and I had to do the same thing. I snuck up on her and made her think she was getting an ear rub and before you knew it, it was done. She didn't like it at all and like you say, the next time wasn't quite so easy.

we should not be too hard on your husband it is a known fact that men cannot multitask so it would be quite difficult for him to hold the cat and at the same put the eyedrop
