I love mums. This year they have been really late. They bloomed late into December and are ready to fade away. All we have had are these pretty pink ones this year. I just got a picture of them before they faded. I have taken several cuttings of them before summer .. sometimes they die due to the intense heat here. A few cutting could help me preserve them for another season. Do you multiply your plants? or save your plants for another year?

I thought your post was going to be about mothers! We sometimes shorten the name to 'chrissies' too.

I have done it in the past but not recently. My mums were a victim of an owner who forgot to water them!! lol

@sofssu They certainly can survive with a little effort but they are inexpensive and maybe people just don't want to take the time to keep them over the winter.

@BelleStarr There isn't much of a winter here.. we are already into summer.. But I get what you are saying.. Personally I would buy more plants for the same money and keep the old ones too.

@BelleStarr I just picked up a clump of dying mums from the sidewalk yesterday.. I wonder why people throw them away.

They only grow again if cuttings are planted. I have missed doing this for some and so I have just one colour. Yours look pretty. Mine have more petals.

@allknowing Actually they have a lot of side growth.. fresh growth if repotted also do beautifully. Here I keep them in doors until the worst of the summer heat is over.

I just save my begonia tubers, or try to. They don't always come back.

@sofssu In Michigan begonia's only return when people bring them into the house for the winter/colder months. They are considered annuals here.

@Jessicalynnt LOl most of my plants seem confused. I guess the sunny pergola adds to the confusion.. ll these years they have had good shade and just the morning sun..

@sofssu I would worry the cold, warm, cold, warm would kill my roses, but they are rather hardy lol

My mums grow from year to year as here they are perennials, does the heat kill them there, Sofs? I do prune my mums prior to them budding and replant the sections that I prune off. If watered enough before it gets too hot they will produce a new mum plant by winter/fall. Mums in Michigan don't start blooming until August with many blooming still right before we get a lot of snow. They do tend to prefer the cooler weather. I found this discussion on the sidebar after reading about a different mum post.

@MarshaMusselman Mums used do act like perennials until they were hybridized so much.. Now we have mums with differently shaped petals and varied colors and they don't seem to adapt to the heat anymore as they used to do before. They tend to die off as the summer hots up. I have them in containers even if I bring them to a shadier spot they don't always survive.

@sofssu We have fancy ones for indoor gardening, but the basic plants for outside. THey don't start growing during our summer months. How cold does it get there during your winters? I'm surprised they don't begin growing when your weather begins to cool off if it ever even does?

I do try to keep my plants alive but once in a while, sadly one will die. I love mums and the ones I have will make it through the winter. They are called Hardy.

@PainsOnSlate I agree they don't survive your kind of winters sometimes, though they are hardy plants. Here the summer heat sometimes scorches them.

I don't have garden...but those are beautiful flowers, and I did not know they were called mums. Compositae family and lilliaceae families offer some of the most beautiful flowers..

@vandana7 Chrysanthemums are what they are actually called mums is the shortened version of the name. I love both daisies and lilies.. both these groups have pretty flowers colorful and bright.
