Anything that you post - a discussion, a response or a comment - has the potential to earn something, depending on whether other users 'interact' with it or not. Interaction can be anything from leaving responses or comments to just 'liking' or even, perhaps, viewing it. If nobody interacts with your posts, then they are very likely to earn little or nothing.
You can't, of course, make people respond to what you post but you can encourage them to do so by posting topics which are likely to interest and inspire people to respond (and by 'maintaining' them - keeping the conversation going), and by involving yourself intelligently and relevantly with other people's discussions in such a way that the people who see your responses and comments want to see more of what you write.

It is definately real money which we earn here. If it wasn't then the electricity company would not have accepted it when I used it to pay the bills

You just post and interact and make 10 dollars by the end of each month and you automatically get paid. You just have to have a pay pal account to where they can deposit your money.
