Yay... my orchids are blooming again. after we moved houses my orchids seemed to do poorly. In fact I lost three of my precious vanda orchids. I have only a few dendrobiums and phalaenopsis left. I wasn't willing to invest anymore on orchids until I got the conditions right for my plants. Now after changing tables and different levels of lighting I guess I have combination right. I can now get some orchids. I love orchids and love the fact that when they are in bloom they hang on for months and months on the plant bringing so much joy and color into the house. Do you like growing orchids? Which are your favorite orchids? If you aren't an orchid person which is your favorite flower?

Our national flower is orchid, but I have no love for it. In fact, I do not love flowers at all. I rather plant vegetables and fruits. These are the things I can eat. I have some herbs too. The herbs are useful when I get sick.

@scheng1 I have a small veggie garden and I have a good number of herbs. I love my flowers too.. the flowers bring the bees and bugs to pollinate the veggies.

I enjoy looking at other people's orchids but have no desire to grow them myself.

@JudyEv Its an addiction (at least for me).. the moment you start with one you tend to buy more.

Orchids are among my favorite flowers. I only have one orchid plant at home, it was a gift from a friend. They are not yet blooming again, but I hope they will soon.

@LadyDuck They certainly are lovely flowers. I hope you get them to bloom again. I always add some ice near the roots when the weather gets very hot here .. it does the trick apart form feeding the fertilizer high in potassium .

@LadyDuck Banana peels on orchids attract other kinds of bugs here.. don't they over there?

@simone10 They aren't really hard to grow if you find them a place they like. They hate being shifted around.

I have several - some of which have been with me for many years. I don't have a lot of luck with phaelenopsis due to repeatedly getting scale bugs on them but other types do well.

@boiboing Bug and snail infestation destroys plants. I usually take hem out and wash them with diluted liquid dish wash before a good rinse in water and replanting. works well for me.

@SIMPLYD I guess green thumb is more about interest and willingness to overlook failures. This one here is a phanenopsis.

I have never grown orchids. I didn't know that the blooming lasted that long.

@marlina The blooms last for a month or more and often a healthy orchid put out more stems than one at a time.

I don't have any luck with growing flowers. My aunt loves orchids too and has quite a few of them in her home. Guess I didn't inherit her green thumb

@Marilynda1225 I guess your aunt's house would be pretty with all those orchids. Its unfair that you didn't inherit her luck with flowers.

My house is shaded so the natural light is hidden when leaves are on the trees. I love growing flowers outside but nothing wants to bloom in my house.

@PainsOnSlate Shade does help to many plants. You could perhaps grow some caladiums that have beautiful leaves of different hues and thrive in shade. I used to grow my plants under grow light when I lived in an apartment.

@PainsOnSlate Maybe you need to feed them more potassium. Banana peels contain abundance of them... if you have not tried that already.
