What Does It Mean?

This morning I was taking my dogs out like I usually do every morning. All of a sudden I heard this horrendous noise. I didn't know what it was and it was a little scary. It seemed like out of nowhere, a huge flock of birds flew over and into the trees in the woods behind us. There had to be at least a thousand of them and they were just chattering away. I couldn't tell what kind of birds they were because they were up so high in the sky. I can't help but wonder if these are the birds that go south for the winter. If so and they have come back, maybe that means spring is just around the corner. One can only hope...

I wonder what makes them fly off all of a sudden. Hopefully it is not someone shooting at them, and triggers off the mass flight. The way they all fly together sure is magnificent.

It really is magnificent to see but like you, I wonder what caused them to take flight.

It usually happens in the spring and they appear to be starlings. They travel in huge numbers. It would be nice if spring is right around the corner.

@PainsOnSlate That's not my picture but from Pixabay so I'm not sure what kind of birds they are.

Starlings look a little like blackbirds or crows don't they? From what I could see, they looked like that but they weren't crows.

@simone10 when I looked up close, your birds have longer wings than starlings. Maybe gulls? Are you near water? That's a lot of big birds.

It is probably the birds getting ready for spring.

I hope that spring is not too far. For the moment it's pretty cold here and the European red robins are still in my garden. Until I see them, winter is here to stay.

I am hoping so. The first thing I thought with a flock that big was the birds were returning for the spring.

They seem to be migrating in a flock. Birds do so to appear stronger to deter possible predators and to take advantage of aerodynamics.

I wonder where they are migrating from. I am hoping they have been south for the winter and are now coming home.

That would scare me too. No birds here though as we just had a snow storm so no signs of them.

The noise was so loud and it was so early in the morning that it really scared me for a minute.

Then indeed it could be that . Birds do migrate when on their former place it becomes impossible for them to live nicely .

Do they travel in the thousands? They did look like they could have been starlings but were up so high, I couldn't tell for sure.

I got that photo from Pixabay but it really doesn't do justice to all of the birds I saw flying that morning. It was kind of scary until I knew what the noise was.

@JudyEv Oh wow, that had to be very scary. I would have thought it was a UFO too.

@simone10 We were woken one night by a huge noise followed by the place being lit up by a big light. That was scary too. I thought it was a UFO but it was a big rescue helicopter looking for a place to land. There had been a bad motor accident on the highway not far from our place.

Did you feel like Tippi Hendren from The Birds? I do like to see them in big flocks in the sky but I don't usually hear them.
