Finding a Bullet in a Geocache

United States
February 15, 2016 12:28pm CST
One of the most surprising things I have found in a Geocache is a bullet. I found it on Friday as I was on my way home from my tea party. I realized later that I probably should not have picked it up as now my fingerprints are on it! I wonder if a bullet is dangerous if it is just sitting there? I love finding caches with trade items and considered taking the bullet or the quarter. I ended up leaving the blue floppy plastic finger puppet but didn't take anything. What would you have taken?

Wow, it's nice to find another geocacher! I only have 325 or so caches to my name but I do have fun!

@Jeanniemaries Oh my, I might have 12! They are all out here in the country side so lots of driving between them. I only do it when a particular friend comes to visit

@paigea I usually do about three at a time and I do them mostly when I find one nearby when I'm out or traveling. I have an app on my phone (a FREE app) that has made it sooooo easy, I love it but you have to have a smart phonel

@Jeanniemaries interesting. Hmmmm. Does this have its own website?

As I told Lori, it's a game. People hide a cache and publish the GPS coordinates to find it. Sometimes the cache is as small as the head of a screw and contains just a piece of paper to log your name, and sometimes it's a large box full of stuff to trade. As of Feb 10 there were 2 million hidden in 184 out of 193 countries. It is LOADS of fun to find them and it's always interesting to see how close one is to your home. They are hidden so unless you are looking for it, it's unlikely you'll just randomly run across one. I looked it up and there are 483 in Singapore alone.

@wiLLmaH Yes, it does. The website is geocache dot com and it's free to join and free to play. The game began about 16 years ago when the site officially opened.

I never knew how it works, so you take something and leave something? Sound like fun.

The point of it is to find it using your GPS. Then there is always a log to sign. That is the main thing. You sign the log to prove you actually found it. Then you log your visit online. Your visit is noted on your own timeline and list of finds and also on the caches list of finders. It's very satisfying to find them! Some have trade items and you can trade or not. Kids love the trade items so I usually leave a kid item or a coin. It is a lot of fun.

@Jeanniemaries Yes, I have left kid items. Getting rid of my stash after years of teaching.

@paigea Teachers items are great. I have two teacher friends that I cache with when I go to Dayton and they always have a bagful of stuff to unload!

The bullet harmless as is. What do you do now? Add something and send it on it's way? I would have taken the quarter and left everything else.

I thought it was probably harmless. I just added the blue finger puppet and put it back in the hiding place. I didn't take the quarter because there wasn't many trade items. So I left it for another person to find.

I'm an avid geocacher. I would not leave a bullet in a cache.....I rarely trade swag, but have been known to leave items in kid friendly caches.

@Jeanniemaries my daughter started with a friend. The friend moved away so she needed another geocaching buddy. We go out about once a week, but have gone to a couple of events. Last summer we went to Wisconsin for the geobash....I think I found at least 60 caches while we were away.

I always like keeping my stash inventory new and fresh, so I swap out items all the time. I like leaving unusual items, but nothing edgy like that bullet!

It seems a bit of a dangerous item to leave. Depending where it was I might have disposed of it. If it was where there might be a fire it might explode.

No danger of a fire, it was all enclosed in metal with nothing around it to catch fire. But it was an interesting find. I posted it on a geocaching site and no one seemed surprised. That in itself seemed surprising!

@JudyEv I agree that it's possibly a stupid thing to put in one if it is dangerous to do so, but if not, I see it as interesting rather than stupid. People from all walks of life find them. I was kind of inquiring here if it was or not a danger to a finder.

I think I prefer the quarter to the bullet.

@Jeanniemaries Do they charge for carts at Ali's down here? They don't at home.

You can always use the quarter to get a shopping cart at Aldi's! A handy item to keep in the car!

@BelleStarr You have to put a quarter in to get one, then you get the quarter back when you return the cart to the corral. So there isn't really a charge. BUT...I have arrived quarterless on occasion and have had to find somebody with change.

I hope that bullet was not used to kill someone and now they have your finger prints and they will come after you. Quick run and hide.

I've never done this sort of thing at all. I'm glad you enjoy it, but I don't know what you should have done about the bullet.

Well, I just left it. I will watch the listing and see if anyone took it. Usually when you sign in that you found the cache you leave a note, some are funny about how hard it was to find or something like that, anyway they always say if they took something or left something.

I wonder why someone would leave a bullet, the meaning behind it? Will bullets explode if they get too hot?

I'd leave it all - I have no need of or use for any of those items. I'd let someone who does have them.

Often you pick up one thing and just move it to another cache. One thing I do keep when I find them are pathtags. They are coins that have a special design that geocachers share with each other. I collect them.

It's a game and it's fun and a challenge. Sometimes too much of a challenge! I never thought I would like doing it until I did my first one. I was hooked.

When I take something it's so I can put in another cache. The caches are usually small around here so taking small items is a must but I happen to have quite a few right now so I left them for others and just added one of my own. So far no one has found it yet, after me.
