I usually bring food that can be shared by a group of people when visiting friends. It could be something like noodles, barbecue or anything for lunch or dinner, or a box of donuts or pizza when it's snack time.

You mean to visit them at home or to visit them when they are in the hospital?
When I visit my friends at their home, I do not bring anything, unless it is a special occasion such as housewarming or birthday or something else.
If I visit them in the hospital, I will give them cash in red packet.
