Unrealistic Expectations

Yesterday, while I was at work, (I'm a cashier), I was informed that my break was going to be given to me a bit late. The reason being that some of the other cashiers had decided not to come to work that day for whatever reasons and so we were shorthanded and there simply wasn't anyone available to cover my break at the time I should of had it. I didn't mind. Taking my break a little late is no big deal to me. However, I know some of my co-workers who have a fit when told the same thing. Some of my fellow cashiers get all bent out of shape if their break is a bit early or a bit late. They expect all their breaks and whatnot to be always be right on the dot of when they are scheduled, no matter what. Personally, I do not understand this reasoning. The way I figure it, when you work in any type of service industry in which your primary job is serving the public, ie, cashiers in any business, restaurant workers, etc. You should expect to take your breaks when business allows and not necessarily at a set time. It is impossible to predict when co-workers might call in or just not show up and also, sometimes business is slower than expected and other times, busier than expected. It is for these reasons that things such as breaks can not always be granted at a precise time. I think that anyone working a service job who expects to always have their breaks at a precise time has unrealistic expectations. What are some unrealistic expectations that you have observed in others? Have you ever had any unrealistic expectations of your own?

I dont have any unrealistic expectations cause I'm always practical about almost everything. I just don't expect too much tp avoid being frustrated.

Where I work we don't even take breaks so some places our lucky that they even give them. Some people just expect more and get nasty when they don't get what they want. I just eat while i work and get up to walk and use the bathroom when I can. I have a desk job so that's why we really don't take breaks.

Some people are very 'set' in their habits and hate anything to change. Like you I think it is best to be flexible - and much more healthy than getting in a tizz over such relatively small issues.

I agree, I've had a lot of different jobs and one must always be flexible about breaks.

Though I like regular timings I rise to the occasion to the needs of the organization. I have seen some raise a hue and cry at the slightest change - siva

I know a lot of people at my previous workplace who hated even a tiny change in the workplace and made a huge issue out of it. I don't understand the need for all this fuss either.
