A Visit to the Dentist - Ouch!

A week ago while visiting the dentist, it was discovered that I had an infection in my gums below the tooth line. Since that visit was for a complete examination and x-rays, the dentist scheduled me to come back today to address the infection in my gums.
It was interesting what was in store for me today. The first thing they had to do was get up under my gums with a high-powered water jet to blast away all bacteria, plaque and other foreign matter. It felt sort of like a tattoo needle constantly jabbing at my gums over and over again. It wasn't unbearably uncomfortable, but it did make me squirm a little bit.
Next, she used a pick to scrape any remaining plaque off my teeth, especially below the gum line. She then gave me a good teeth cleaning. At least that part wasn't painful, but the polisher spinning on my teeth sort of felt like a grinder or sander. Again, it didn't hut, but just made me squirm. But I was a trooper and held still while she cleaned.
That was followed by injecting medicine down into my gums to treat the infection. Once again, it felt like I was being jabbed by a needle over and over again. But I had my big boy pants on today, sucked it up and got through the visit without crying like a baby!
I have an oral medication rinse that I have to use for the next two weeks, and then I go back to the dentist again for a final cleaning and to make sure the infection is gone. Not looking forward to that visit, but the dentist says that one will be much less irritating.
The good news is that, other than the infection in my gums, my teeth are as healthy and clean as can be!

I don't think there is any need for such a graphic description - 'being jabbed by a needle over and over'. You should spare a thought for those of us who are already procrastinating over making a dental appointment. I'm glad the infection has been found and treated. I had an abscessed tooth once and that wasn't nice either.

Well glad you made it thru and got it taken care of before it got worse. I hate having dental work done but I always have to be medicated when I go to the dentist and if I have fillings or any work done i get Novocaine as i don't do well with pain.

I'm right there with you on that! I am such a big baby when it comes to pain. I have been so lucky that my teeth have always been healthy and I haven't had to have much work done. That's my incentive to keep my teeth as healthy as possible...to avoid the pain of having some serious dental work done to my teeth! It was bad enough when they had to take out all four of my wisdom teeth!

I haven't been to the dentist in a long time. I would have screamed or yelled.

Besides the uncomfortable feeling you speak about, the rest sounds very satisfying. I haven't been to the dentist in such a long time. I really should go for a check up. They just scare the hell out of me.

I went for a period of about 20 years without ever going to the dentist, and then when I finally went to one they told me my teeth looked absolutely great! Theirs jaws about hit the floor when I told them I hadn't been to a dentist in 20 years!

I made it through the dentist visit with flying colors, and I'm the biggest baby ever when it comes to those sort of things! Don't worry too much about your upcoming visit, you'll be fine!

I have my teeth cleaned by the dentist twice a year, she does the same, she uses a pick to scrape any remaining plaque off my teeth and from under my gums. It is not painful because I do the cleaning every 6 months, so there is not a lot of plaque to remove.

@moffittjc I agree that the sound is unpleasant. I have not a lot of plaque, my husband has to clean their teeth every 4 months.

My dentist said my teeth were amazingly clean considering how long it had been since I last visited. She barely found any plaque to scrape off. The part of the scraping that really bothered me was the sound the pick made as she used it on my teeth.

I hate going to the dentist too, but yes, I'm glad it's over. For now.
Interestingly, I religiously go to the dentists twice a year (every 6 months), but I missed a visit. So, I said I would remember to call and get back on track for my next 6 month appointment. Well, when I finally got around to calling to set up an appointment, they asked my why I waited 4 years between appointments!!!

I don't mind the pain so much. It's the sound of the dental tools that drives me crazy! Sort of like someone dragging their fingernails down a chalkboard!

@JohnRoberts I also don't like the gritty taste in my mouth after they do the cleaning.

@moffittjc I know what you mean. The sound of the drill. Also bad is the smell.
