Just when I think I am getting organized.

Today the power company has a planned power outage from 1:30 to 4:30. I filled the big gallon (why gallons in Canada?) camping jug with water and I filled some jugs with drinking water. Then I planned my errands so I will likely be out during the power outage anyway. I generally decide to vacuum when the power is off, so leaving the house seems simpler than remembering what I can and can't do. Can't myLot. Since I will get home just in time for supper I decided to set the crock pot up so supper will be ready when I get home. doh!

Unless you have a battery operated crockpot that I don't think exists, I think your supper is going to be late.

No, it doesn't happen often. The purpose would be work they need to do somewhere on the power lines. They didn't give us the details; but power is shut off when they work on power lines.

@paigea We live a few miles from the power company so when something happens we get fast service.

@AbbyGreenhill Well nothing has happened, they are just doing work today. They let us know a week ago.

It is so easy to do this. My thought is usually 'I can't do anything else, I might as well do the ironing'. Double duh!

The first thing I did today when the power went out was go to the closest and flip on the light. Then I found my pants (slacks) in the dark closet and went out so I could stop doing those things.

Yes it is. And of course the first thing I did when the power went out was go in the closet and flip the light switch. Good thing I went out.

A planned outage aye. So does that mean they will fix the issues with the unplanned outages. I think in my area they need to replace old stuff.

The only unplanned outages are due to storms so doubt that is getting fixed. Just routine maintenance I assume.

@paigea Here I think if they just update some of the equipment we wouldn't have as many outages.

@fishtiger58 well, I hope they do that then. Ours seems very good; there is never an outage without a good reason like a tree taking down a power line. And the power company even patrols for that and keeps trees cut that are near the lines and tells home owners to cut the trees on their own property to avoid problems.

That's a good point: a gallon seems out of place in Canada.

Old habits die hard. We still talk about a 5 gallon pail for certain things.

I thought power cuts were only here in India. We have a home UPS that takes care of our computer, tv, lights and fans when the power is out.

@paigea a generator does much more than a home UPS. That's good then.

We have to be prepared for a power outage in a storm - just in case. This power outage was for maintenance and was only for a couple of hours. We have a generator but no need to start it up in this case.

@SIMPLYD They are also called Crock pot. They are good for cooking tough cuts of meat to make them tender. They are good for all sorts of stew type meals. I have not collected many recipes that I like yet though. One can use them to cook for 4 to 8 hours in general.

Well, I tried to be organized and then I went to plug in the slowcooker so supper could be cooking while I went out while there was no power! I realized what I was doing in time.

Wow, I've never had to deal with a planned power outage. In the US, the power only goes out if there is a storm or an accident. We are spoiled!

We have to be ready for it to go out if there is a storm but that actually is rare. So is the planned outage for maintenance, rare. But when they have maintenance to do; they shut the power off. I am curious how they keep everything upgraded and maintained without ever turning off the power?

@paigea - That's a really good question--maybe there is always a backup system so that one can be taken down while the other continues to operate.

its a pain anytime they have to take away a service you use. I don't know about you but I swear its like when you have something easy access its no big deal take that away and then suddenly its like you can't live without it you have to use it.

Your post is a reminder that I should feel so happy we haven't had power outages in a good few months now. We were having them all the time for a long time, every day, two hours a day, and sometimes two sessions of that a day. If we were lucky, there'd be a few days break, and then it would start again. This was the whole of South Africa, not just in my town. There were stage one (only one outage that day) and stage two schedules, and we'd have to look in the newspaper or online to see which stage was scheduled for that day, but sometimes they'd suddenly change it at the last minute and we'd often be "in the dark" as to what to expect next. It was pretty awful, but was necessary to help prevent total blackout. I hope those times are over for good!

Smart move to plan your day to minimize the discomfort during the power outage. I would do the same. I love using the crock pot to cook stews.
