Pet Peeves, I Have a Few #5

One of my pet peeves pertains to music and a hell of a lot of people. It probably bugs me more than it should, but I hear it all to often. I'm talking about people who proclaim "I listen to everything" when they actually don't. There are so many genres and sub-genre's that it's near impossible to listen to them all. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but the majority of the "I listen to everything" crowd aren't listening to goth, punk, death metal, or even world music, just to name a few. I am a music junkie, with a very large and diverse taste. Yet, I don't listen to "everything," because I don't. I really can't stand, for instance, what passes as country music these days. I only like old-school hip-hop, and I'm certainly not interested in, say, j-pop. I might have a very long list of what I DO listen to (I do,) but I certainly can't say that I listen to everything. In the grand scheme of things, it's really not something that I should be worried about, but it drives me crazy, and maybe I'm a music snob, as my girlfriend says. Maybe I even need some help, but it irk's me.

Most people, when they say, "I listen to everything," mean "I listen to everything on the radio." What's on the radio encompasses approximately .003% of all music out there. You and I have been online friends going back to the B-place, and you know how many "never heard of him/her/them" comments I get when I post things about music. No, I don't listen to "everything." I don't like metal, I don't really care for opera (save for The Makado), and you don't have enough money to get me to suffer through another Taylor Swift song. I tried three, and that was four too many.

Yes, "on the radio" would have been good to include here. I also don't like things such as "I love reggae," yet won't listen to anything other than Bob Marley. Or, as you put it, "all of them" is not an answer to favorite song by Band X. I have no idea why all of this bugs me, but it does.

@teamfreak16 -- Ooh, X! Love them! Saw them open for Warren Zevon in 1987!! (I know you'll appreciate that joke. ) I have lamented about something similar: people who claim they're "big fans" of someone but they only own the "big album" (such as "big fans" of Meat Loaf who only have Bat Out of Hell or "big fans" of the aforementioned Warren Zevon who only have Excitable Boy -- or worse, only have the 45 of "Werewolves of London"!). Heck, I'm not that big a fan of Fleetwood Mac, but I have Bare Trees and Mystery to Me in addition to Fleetwood Mac and Rumours!

@FourWalls - or, "whatever song is the hit is the only good song on the album," when, usually, most of the rest is better. Nice X reference, by the way. And I like the Bob Welch Fleetwood Mac era best. I'm far from a huge Mac fan, but they are very good at what they do, and are entertaining live. But I loved Bob Welch.

I guess I don't listen to much at all as I'm not up with half of these terms. :)

I was going to mention more: industrial, electronica, acid jazz, darkwave, etc, but didn't want to go overboard with it.

That is a good point. Most people have their preference of only a few styles anyway. I am actually very narrow minded when it comes to music, at least modern music. Most modern music has not evolved much in my opinion except for a few genres. The rest have pretty much stayed the same or went backwards for the past 20 to 30 years. Of course, that is mostly mainstream music.

I agree. A lot of mainstream music has also become unlistenabal, at least to me.

They were the same people who claimed modern music sucks but never dared to listen to a single Indie act or foreign act because they were so spoiled with their mainstream american and local music.

Now dont be so touchy, I will listen to every type of music , do I like it all? No but I do appreciate all music. I am so with you on country music, I like the old stuff there too, Rap? I kind of like some of today`s :) give me some Nicki and Lil Wayne. There is some of the metal I can listen to and other I cant. I am not a music snob, play it and I will try to dance to it.

For me it depends a hell lot on my mood that particular moment. It may happen that I suddenly start to tap my foot to a song from a genre I dislike or don't care for or change the station wen a song from a supposedly loved genre comes along. I guess I am pretty flexible that ways. Whatever gets me going haha . cheers

Oh, I understand. I think more people ought to listen to as many different styles as possible. If, like me, you take the word "everything" literally, there's just too much out there. But, yeah, the more you listen to, the easier to match your mood. Cheers to you, too.
