Oh dear, I caught the wrong train

When I took a wander out to day I decided to stay on the tram to Piccadilly Railway station for a change. There was an announcement for the Airport express, which was due to leave within a few minutes, so I decided to take a ride out to the airport for an hour or so. The train slowed shortly after leaving Manchester and came to a stop at a station, which was not what I expected. Undeterred I chose to carry on because a stopping train would not take a lot longer. Before long I began to notice that the stations we were stopping at were not familiar, yet somehow I was not overly concerned by that. Of course I discovered why this was when we arrived at Glossop, on the edge of the Peak District in Derbyshire. Since it was raining and not appropriate to walk around a rural are, my only option was to catch a train back into Manchester. Oh well, at least it passed a couple of hours.

Lucky you! There is no chance of raking the wrong train from here. We have a station and we have trains running (not always on time( too. One goes in one direction and one goes in the other and they both go to the main line bewtween Turin and Mila. One stops firther west while the other stops to the east. Then they come back here

Oh well, even if you went the wrong way you would end up back eventually.

To me that sounds like fun, I would have been busy taking pictures of interesting things the train passed. I haven't been on a train since we came back to the US in 1959.

Had I realised which direction I was travelling I would have got off the train rather than take pictures.

@rebelann For the obvious reason, it was not where I was intending to go.

What a nice way to kill a few hours. I would be sitting by the window, watching the world go by while daydreaming.

Had I been watching the scenery I would have realised that I was on the wrong train much earlier.

@Asylum Yes, I'm sure you would have realized it sooner. But it seems like it was a nice way to spend the day.

@Asylum I suppose the airport trip will happen another day. Then you can tell us about it as well. Looking to the sidebar, @ArthurChappell has a post about Glossop. I had never heard of the place before today, and look, now two mentions.

@Asylum Airports can be interesting places to people-watch, yup. And if you're an anorak, you can plane spot too.

If we had trains like this, and if retired seniors had passes like in the U.K. I would go sightseeing this way too.

My senior citizens travel pass covers all travel on local transport in the Greater Manchester area, which includes buses, trains and trams. Glossop is just outside of the area, but they usually accept it anyway.

@Asylum I wish we had public transportation that was as widespread and convenient as you do in the UK and the rest of Europe.

Yup I think your only option was to get on the next train heading back as you didn't really know where you were.

I do know the area slightly, but being a rural area it is not suitable for a rainy day so I simply returned to Manchester.

@Asylum Perhaps if it wasn't raining you could have looked around, but I would have gotten back on that train bound for home as well.

No, it was only a last minute decision to go to the airport for a change. I did expect that I may have to buy a ticket to return, but I went to ask he ticket sales office I was informed not to bother about it.

I've done the same by mistake on the buses. Who knows, maybe we needed a change that day, a new journey, like getting lost. I have to say if you don't mind, I got a little lost reading this post not like being on the wrong tram to pickle but being in another part of the world altogether. It was very cute. But don't feel bad because when I flew to Europe I went to the train station, to take the bus to the airporte in another city and then rode another small bus across the tarmack to the big airship. Very strange! And no, my arms were not tired flying across the big pond.

shame you weren't able to look around - I love Glossop - really nice village - I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang there - not the film, the actual car, at a vintage car rally in the town

@Asylum getting on the wrong train might be no problem for rural areas and such but when I still lived in NYC and after work I felt so tired it was dangerous to fall asleep on the subway if you had to change trains. Why? Because one time I did fall asleep and missed my stop. When I woke up again being the wintertime it was dark out and I was in a very bad neighborhood. So I dashed over to the other platform and was so glad the train came quickly.

I remember one time as a school child I had been out of town for about 14 hours. We caught the train home from Manchester and woke up in Blackpool, which was about an hour further along the track.
